Ibiza Underground offers an alternative

Seven of the world’s best-known clubs are in Ibiza - Amnesia, Space, Pacha, Privilege, El Divino, Eden, Es Paradis - but for underground techno and house fans DC10 has always been the place to get down.

But whilst DC10 has slowly but surely risen to dominate the underground scene of Ibiza, a club by name of Ibiza Underground has also quietly been offering an alternative club vibe hidden well away from tourists.

“Ibiza Underground doesn’t do any advertising, we don’t announce our line-ups and we don’t charge on the door,” Underground’s owner Nick Fry told Beatportal last night.

“We’re not in it for the money, we just offer an alternative space for people to enjoy themselves.”

Ibiza anthem: Eric Prydz ‘Pjanoo’

Ibiza is where dance anthems get forged, and so far this season Eric Prydz’ ‘Pjanoo’ is one of the big track of the summer on the island.

It’s everywhere in Ibiza, in taxis, bars and clubs, and all over the radio.

Pete Tong has been caning it and it’s been the biggest record at his Wonderland night at Eden for the last couple of weeks.

Has Stimming scored the summer club anthem of 2008?

Germany’s up-and-coming man of the moment drops a Latin vocal bomb.

Every summer can be remembered by a great record that sums up the season.

An anthem that soundtracks holidays in Ibiza, festivals in Eastern Europe, raves in the park or even just an old fashioned ‘back to mine’ in your back garden.

Ibiza Rocks?

Is diversity always a good thing?

The scene outside the Ibiza Rocks hotel last night wasn’t something you’d expect to see in Ibiza. A hoard of skinny-jeaned, converse-wearing, Pete Doherty hat-sporting NME wannabes congregating on the streets of San Antonio in anticipation for the live bands they were about to see.

Interview - Andrew Weatherall in Paris: Part II

Some things change, and some things stay the same.

Weatherall’s interest in fashion and visual art has persisted and forms part of his quirky artistic persona today.

He says, “I like cultural input – I collect some interesting vintage clothes. That’s my release for most things.

“When I come home from the studio, I usually read to unwind.

“I am lucky enough to get to the studio from mid-day until midnight, so after that all day I don’t feel the need to walk around with an Ipod.

“I also paint, and do prints. For the last Two Lone Swordsmen album all the artwork was mine.”

Regarding downloads versus tangible music, Weatherall says his latest album called ‘Wrong Meeting’ was the antithesis about what Beatport is about.

Steve Aoki’s Top 3 Ibiza tracks and Essential Mix

American DJs are few and far between in Ibiza as the island is more Euro-centric, but Steve Aoki is one Los Angeles transplant that has made a big impact on the party island.

As resident DJ of Ibiza Rocks, Steve Aoki plays at the much-hyped Ibiza Rocks Hotel every two weeks, warming up the arena for the headlining rock bands.

He won ‘Best Set of the Season’ at the Ibiza Awards 2007, and last week he stepped up to the famous BBC Radio 1 turntables to produce an Essential Mix, a set usually reserved for only the DJing elite.

Podcast: Beatport Burners: Episode 72

Beatport

With the addition of the new Beatport Genrecasts, let’s not forget the weekly staple of Beatport Burners!

This week we’re serving up a fresh mix of Quivver, Jay Lumen, Flash Brothers, Subsky, a Solaris Heights remix of Tocadisco, Presslab and more.

As always, this Beatport Burner is an ‘enhanced’ podcast, which means each track in the mix has a track mark and shows the release artwork, so when you listen to it in iTunes or your iPod you’ll be able to skip through tracks, see the cover art and click through to Beatport should you wish to buy the release.

It’s the easiest way for DJs to do record shopping!
