Dennis Ferrer’s new ‘Hey Hey’ video

Dennis Ferrer’s ‘Hey Hey’ was undoubtedly one of the biggest house tracks to emerge out of Miami’s Winter Music Conference back in March, thanks to a slew of new remixes from London’s Defected Records protracting the shelf life of the hit like a can of sweet evaporated milk.

And just in time for the summer sofa sloths, they’ve produced a new glossy music video (above), which will further cement ‘Hey Hey’ as the most resilient house track of the year.

Lee Mortimer’s Bass Wobblers

Modern electro is all about gut wrenching basslines and sub-sonic frequencies. It is a land where characters of the nastiest and most gruesome disposition are worshipped like some sort of weird dystopia, where nice guys die like dogs and bad boys rule the universe.

If what is coming out of the speakers isn’t in-your-face ball-crushing bass, then it might as well be a tea dance for the local girl scouts.

Lee Mortimer [a] wobbles with the best of them. As Britain’s answer to forward-thinking, accessible four-to-the-floor bass music, Mortimer is about as unsavory as they come. Your parents would not be pleased if you cranked anything from his label Wearhouse Music out of your bedroom stereo.

With wild rebellion and neighbour disputes in mind, we asked Morty for eight of his current favorite bass monsters to help all ye who seek dancefloor destruction and dream of punching an old person in the face.

Video: Slyde ‘Move Ya Body’

Rising breakbeat stars Slyde [a] have just launched their own label, Slybeats, with the mammoth debut release ‘Move Ya Body’ (video above).

Slyde were the original creators of ‘Frequency’, the huge breakbeat track from 2008 which NAPT remixed magnificently, and their more recent cut ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ showed the duo are capable of creating their own inspired sounds - the track balanced nu skool breakbeat with electro-acid synths and raw UK rap.

Weekend Weapons…Dubfire and Oliver Huntemann

US DJ Dubfire [a] and German producer Oliver Huntemann’s close working relationship bore new fruit this month.

‘Fuego’, a dark and twisted techno throbber from the pair of sometimes collaborators, is sonically closer to Dubfire’s 2007 solo hit ‘Ribcage’ than the duo’s last frenetic outing, ‘Dios’.

With a tick tock of drones and a somewhat eerie tension, the track is big on atmosphere and low on the dramatic techno set pieces that both producers tend to fall back on in the studio.

Certainly, the tracks that both artists have picked for this week’s Weekend Weapons suggests a growing affinity for experimentation. With subtle deep house from Masomenos, a Strictly Rhythm house classic, and wonky techno from MMM, the net extends a bit further than the pristine, nitrous-fueled bleep sounds that Dubfire champions so persuasively.

Weekend Weapons…Chris Carrier

With over a dozen years churning out sweet house music from the Parisian underground, DJ and producer Chris Carrier [a] could well break through this year thanks to his brand new album ‘Gosse De Paris’ on Robsoul Recordings.

The stunning house LP features 16 cuts produced exclusively by Carrier, and is full of rolling house beats, deep soulful grooves, gorgeous instrumentals, and funky disco-flavoured numbers. Think 20:20 Vision, with a dash of Kenny Dixon Jr. and Derrick Carter thrown into the milky pile.

The album comes on the back of what has been an onslaught of Chris Carrier killer releases recently on ThirtyOneTwenty, Off, and Jef K’s label Silver Network, the latter of which is about to drop one of the year’s biggest club hits, The Gathering ‘In My System, a monumental deep house cut from Chris Carrier, Jef K, and Chez Damier.

‘In My System’ is one of the most hyped tracks in clubland currently, and is likely to push the trio deeper into the consciousness of clubland then they’ve ever been before. Look out.

With Carrier’s album quickly being named as one of the year’s best out-and-out house albums, we caught up with the Frenchman to find out what other dancefloor cuts he has lurking in his record box.

Guaranteed fizz: Erol Alkan and Boys Noize ‘Lemonade’

‘Lemonade’ is a cocktail made in indie electro heaven. Berlin’s Boys Noize [a] teamed up with London indie god Erol Alkan [a] for a monumental cut that’s as loud as it is explosive. It’s out now on Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound imprint.

With fizzy machine bleeps, outrageous synthesizers, and fist-pumping snares, ‘Lemonade’ has already got the blogosphere foaming at the mouth, with some even reporting that French electro rude boys Justice were behind the track.

Weekend Weapons…Silicone Soul

Glasgow’s Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie aka Silicone Soul [a] returned today with the second installment of their venerable mix compilation series ‘Darkroom Dubs’.

For underground house fans, the compilation offers a moody trip of dark and dubby house that is uncompromising and expansive in its quest to throw you into the deep end.

With exclusive and unreleased cuts from Klartraum, Sei A, Martinez, Masomenos, Prompt, Nivek Tsoy, Jet Project, and other under-the-radar producers, the mix comp has already been named Mixmag’s ‘Compilation of the Month’, with other dance music media trumpeting a similar response.

The compilation is available in both a mixed and unmixed (30 track bundle) format.

Bomb Alert! MMM (Errorsmith, Fiedel) ‘Nous Sommes MMM’

One of the hottest releases floating about the techno world at the moment is MMM ‘Nous Sommes MMM’, which comes from Berghain resident Fiedel, and Errorsmith’s Erik Wiegand.

The two tracker, released on Wiegand’s quiet and respected imprint MMM, entices dancefloors with its somewhat bizarre soundclash of Germanic trance and ravey techno. Mmmmmmmm.

In music videos, there has always been something of a race to the bottom. Sex sells, and directors pay very close attention to the guidelines broadcasters dictate. What’s the most amount of nakedness we can squeeze into three minutes before the watershed?

For the most part, the addition of gyrating booties and shapely midriffs to a track that has nothing to do with sex seems mightily contrived, at least to those not watching. The music video channels’ under-18, mainly male, demographic of course, absolutely loves it. It’s why they’re watching in the first place.
