What’s Tokyo’s Womb like? We venture inside
As Beatportal grows, we send our spies to ever-more remote parts of the world, including Tokyo, Japan, which recently hosted Japan’s premier New Year’s Eve party for 2008/2009.
Club Womb is like something out of Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner – an underground club with no signs outside, surrounded by the hypnotic, neon rainbow of Shibuya’s candy-coloured love hotel district.
Two innocuous metal doors in the seedy underbelly of Tokyo are the only giveaway to this techno mecca’s locale.

Last night, on 30th December 2008, Beatportal warmed up for the NYE celebrations in Tokyo by touching down in Air, one of Shibuya’s best clubs.
Check out our mini review, loaded with murky, neon-tinged club snaps and a track ID of a tech-house banger.

Dance-floor ammo: Dapayk ‘Deva’ Remix
With lines like, “I love my cocaine”, “I need drugs” and “I f*ck my way to the top”, this track is pretty representative of a big part of the club scene, as far as DJ groupies go.
Boasting solidly satisfying beats and late-’80s Detroit stabs ‘n’ pads, ‘Deva’ remix is a beautiful and addictive rush.

Dance-floor ammo: ‘Sandwiches’
This is weirdest tech-house lick you’ve ever heard.
Actually, I take that back, the one I heard last night featuring samples of E.T. flirting with Elliott takes the trophy, but this is still weird as sh*t…

Dance-floor ammo: ‘The Curse’
So you want to get possessed by devilish tech house?
Check out this staple in the sets of Claude VonStroke, featuring trippy UFO effects, a gnarly pad straight out of the Predator sound banks ["GET TO THE CHYAP-UR!!” -Schwarzenegger] and rough ‘n’ tumble snares.

Club Matter opens this week
It’s Monday, but already Beatportal are planning on hitting the tiles and spending high numbers at the super-duper Matter club this Thursday, on the press launch.
In case you didn’t know, Matter is the latest venue to launch in the UK [a good thing, you see, after the closures of The Cross, Turnmills, Canvas, The End etc], and it’s being hyped as the ‘best in the world’, with the official opening on Friday 19th September (featuring live acts) and an “electronic” opening on Saturday 20th (featuring DJs).
Matter’s promoters don’t call it “chameleon-like” for nothin’…

New “DJ” video game hits US / Japan / China
Check out this obscure title from Korea that was such a success in its first incarnation for PC and PSP, in 2004 and 2006 respectively, in China, Japan and Korea (with each country featuring songs specific to those regions), that some sequels are coming to the States.
The art in DJ Max Fever is particularly striking, so check out the finer details inside.

Grooverider released from Dubai prison?
The word on the internet is that Grooverider, the drum & bass legend who was incarcerated in Dubai earlier in the year following the discovery of a small amount of marijuana and porn in his possession, has been freed.
This is what DJ Hype’s AIM account is saying, as you can see in the lead pic.
All AIM accounts in the pic have been digitally altered to protect their users’ anonymity.
