Interview: Laidback Luke on the dangers of doing it live

Recording a DJ mix compilation is a scary prospect, but recording one live in a club with actual clubbers on the dancefloor is an altogether more difficult challenge.

Dutch DJ and producer Laidback Luke who’s had a very successful year thanks to his standout hits ‘Be’, ‘Show’ and remixes for Steve Angello and Martin Solveig took the live club mix challenge offered by Stealth’s lead man Roger Sanchez, and the result is the first part of a new ‘Stealth Live!’ mix series.

We caught up with risk-taker/guinea pig Laidback Luke to find out about the dangers of ‘doing it live’.

iDrum: Ministry of Sound Anthems

Our favorite iPhone app – iDrum – just got even more useful for EDM producers.

Back in August, we reviewed the original iDrum releases and were blown away by their functionality and intuitive features.

Their latest edition, the aptly titled iDrum: Ministry of Sound Anthems (iTunes link), includes an array of totally professional samples gathered from the MoS vaults.

Josh Wink announces new LP ‘When A Banana Was Just A Banana’

Philadelphia-based DJ and producer Josh Wink today announced details of his fourth studio album titled ‘When A Banana Was Just A Banana’.

“In a nutshell, it speaks really of the loss of innocence of music,” explained Wink, who seems to be on a personal mission to rid the electronic music world of its pigeonholes.

“Music was just music when I was growing up. Nobody was ridiculed or had views of ‘I only listen to this one kind of music’, I grew up listening to everything.

“Today, so many people tend to only listen to one style of music with a strong opinion of why. I miss the innocence of how it was, like when you were younger, ‘A Banana Was Just A Banana’.”

After the jump there is the full tracklist of his LP, plus track descriptions from Josh Wink himself.

Beatportal user Tom Phillipson got in touch with us recently to highlight his video demo on YouTube which illustrates a Mod he built for his Novation 25SL Compact, which extended the controls of the MIDI keyboard to include his iPod Touch.

Tom used the TouchOSC app that allows you to send and receive Open Sound Control messages over a Wi-Fi network. Sweet.

Flying Lotus drops 69 tracks for Essential Mix

Following on from the success of his longplayer ‘Los Angeles’ (check it in the player), revered leftfield master Flying Lotus took BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix to another, more blissful level this week with a sardine-packed tracklist that contains no less than 69 tracks.

In the two-hour window he was given he dropped jumbled up electronica loops, drifting instrumentals and sunny broken beat dreams; as well as poked fun at the British institution’s high brow reputation.

Check the ridiculously long tracklist after the jump and then listen to his mix again - it’s nothing less than a work of art, we think.

Production Master Class: Automation

After a brief US holiday break, our master classes are back in session.

In this lesson, a bevy of EDM’s top producers reveal their insights into the process of automating tracks.

By automating effects and synth parameters, producers keep things interesting by constantly changing sounds and textures as a track progresses to its peak.

Some artists discuss their approach using broad theoretical brushstrokes, while others go much deeper into the specifics of the various tools in their arsenal.

Either way, these insights are sure to help producers of all skill levels add intensity and drama to their mixes.

Weekend Weapons…Sebo K

This week’s Weekend Weapons piece features an upfront selection from Mobilee Records’ Sebo K.

Having built up a solid reputation during 2007 thanks to numerous killer club cuts, the Berlin based DJ/producer has had a comparatively quiet 2008, although he did find time to release ‘Diva’, one of the biggest and most widely supported tracks of the year.

This weekend’s gigs saw him embark on a UK-based double header, headlining Phonica Records’ huge birthday celebration at Corsica Studios in London alongside Prins Thomas, then traveling up to Liverpool for Mumu @ Club So on Saturday.

Here are the three biggest dancefloor destroyers from Sebo K’s weekend.

TV Friend (Hot Chip Remix)

Who Made Who [Gomma]

Who Made Who, those maniac Danish characters who like to dress up in the oddest outfits and do covers of Benny Benassi are back with a new album and super Hot Chip remix.

Hot Chip, as you may well have accurately noted, seem to have remixed literally everyone recently; they hear a track, they remix it, that’s how they roll.

Metrik [Viper Recordings]

Sounding familiar already? Yes Metrik has taken the same Nina Simone sample as used by Layo & Bushwacka on their massive ‘Love Story’ record and used it in this futuristic, up-beat drum & bass anthem.

Metrik joins the long list of artists this year to have taken the wonderful vocal talents of Nina and this time we see ‘Rags & Old Iron’ used on a high energy, techy drum & bass tune.
