Loöq Interviews Musa Hove and Iain Horrocks from Cause & Effekt

Iain Horrocks and Musa Hove are Cause & Effekt, and they each bring loads of creativity and expertise to the studio.  When we heard their new track “8Ball” we knew we had to have it for Loöq!

Loöq: Who is Cause and who is Effekt?  And what inspired the name?  And can you enlighten us as to your respective musical backgrounds?

Musa: Iain is Cause and Musa is Effekt, which represents how we work in the studio, Iain building new ideas and Musa crafting them and polishing
them.

Iain: The name came from the fact that everything happens for a reason. There’s always a Cause. And there’s always an Effekt. We were brainstorming names for a while. We had lots of ideas but none seemed to have the same ring to them as Cause and Effekt. Its one of those names that everyone can relate to, because of the philosophy behind the phrase. You don’t even have to philosophize to see Cause and Effekt going on around you. It’s everywhere. It’s why the world keeps changing.

Kevin Knapp Picks Up The Mic On Yellowcake’s “Toe The Line”

San Francisco DJ and producer Kevin Knapp lends his vocals skills to Yellowcake’s most recent release “Toe The Line.” The new EP is out today on Beatport and iTunes.

Loöq caught up with Kevin to ask him a few questions.  Kevin keeps it real with his answers (and spills the beans on a few upcoming projects—this man is BUSY).

Loöq: You worked with Marc Kate (aka Silencefiction) and Yellowcake (aka Jondi) on this EP.  Tell us how “Toe The Line” came together.

Kevin: Toe the Line came about in a fairly organic way actually.  I have been working on projects pretty steadily with Silencefiction over the last year and as we are both good friends with Jondi (my co –collaborator under the moniker Slow Poke), we were both privy to the track in its original incarnation as he’d sent it to us to hear our thoughts.  I felt like it was a really strong track with thuggish, unapologetic bass sensibilities, par for the course for Yellowcake, but I had some ideas for a vocal treatment that differed somewhat from what I heard.  So I mentioned that to Jondi and sent over some ideas and we were off and running.  I have done all my vocal recording with Silencefiction at his studio, and he’s really good at getting the best out of me on the mic, so all of us getting together to do this was a natural fit.

Loöq: What other vocal projects do you have coming up?

Kevin: I’m fortunate to have a bunch of new material slated to come out over the next few months.  I finished a track with Matt Tolfrey and Inxec called *Real Talk* which is slated for release in May on Murmur.  I also have a track coming out on Leftroom Limited called *Like This* which Audiojack is in the process of remixing now (or soon) as I understand it.

Interview with ART OF HOT

Dave Richardson and Chris Demetras are no newbie producers—let’s just say their combined discographies would not fit in your wallet.  As two experienced dudes, they refuse to be pinned down by the genre-of-the-week.  They can do tech-house, house, and electro, but apparently dub-step and DnB just as easily.  We signed their brilliant track “Disco Break” back in the day and it was picked up by Dance Dance Revolution.  We’re glad we picked up the “Play EP” as it has been picked up by Sasha in his latest sets.  We try to understand some of the mysteries of Art of Hot via this interview ...

Loöq Records catches up with Jan van Lier on his South America tour

Loöq flagged down Jan van Lier in the midst of his South America tour.  His new single “Comet” is out today on Loöq Records.

Loöq: What was your inspiration for the track “Comet”?

JvL: I do a variety of styles. Some tracks are full-on dancefloor mayhem (One Through Seven, DeepRush, etc) and others more euphoric melodic dance music (Rishada, Comet, etc...) For me it’s important to keep a balance because it allows me to stay fresh and not get hung up on a particular sound.

Comet started off with just trying out a few different sounds and modulations, and building the rest of the track around that. It ended up as a nice and big track to play towards the end of a set to have people reflect on the night they just had, which hopefully was a great one.

Everything Lines Up For Methodrone

Loöq Records interview Methodrone.  Their debut album “Nonlinear Reality” is out on Loöq Records 10/28.

Loöq: Your debut album is entitled “Nonlinear Reality.” Is this a commentary on the stochastic turbulence of this day and age, or did you just think it sounded cool?

S:  Commentary on the world? No, though I like the sound of that.
The name really reflects the way the album was constructed (written, recorded, etc..) and is also a kind of commentary on the lives we have been living during the recording process.  We live on opposite coasts, so almost nothing could be done in a linear fashion so we are pretty luck to have today’s technologies to assist with the process.  Having to live in this non linear style for the last couple of years has kind of made this our standard operating procedure when it comes to the work Methodrone is producing.

Sasha Won’t Stop Hammering It

Interview with Issac

“Sense” is one of those tracks that manages to embody every positive quality in dance music at once.  It’s driving, but also lush.  It’s big, but not cheesy.  It’s psychedelic, but not spacey.  It certainly makes you want to move.

We jokingly said that if Sasha were to offer a reaction (he never does, as far as we know) he would say he’s hammering all the mixes all the time—this release would be a perfect fit for his impeccable style.  Well, maybe it was a self-fulfilling prophecy, as we did receive an email soon after from Sasha’s track wrangler requesting all the masters.  So maybe Sasha IS hammering it every set.

Update: It turns out that Sasha really IS hammering this track.  Here’s a video of Sasha playing “Sense” at Cream in Ibiza: http://bit.ly/YZSAH

Loöq Records interviews Kevin Knapp on new release and the San Francisco scene

DJ Kevin Knapp, recording as ”Slow Poke [a]“ (with Jondi), has a new release out this week entitled Fog Man/Frog Man.  Loöq throws Kevin some curveball questions ... see how he manages below.

Loöq Records: Tell us about the new release.  Fog Man is a smooth groove, deep and easy to get.  Frog Man is fucked in the head—deranged melodic techno.  ‘splain.

Kevin Knapp: Fog man is me and Jondi really coming into our own as a production duo.  It really has both his and my fingerprints all over it from top to bottom.  As I’ve begun to find my voice as an EDM producer I find that I really am getting a lot of my personal story out in that bass line and percussive sections of the tracks I produce.  Fog Man says exactly what I’m trying to, with its low register make up.  The smooth groove on the top, in my opinion anyway, is sort like a caged frenetic insect that just begs to freed and haphazard.
