How David Guetta became the biggest DJ in the world

Amongst David Guetta’s DJ possessions you will find a pair of headphones that he helped design for Beats, Dr. Dre’s audio gear company, a wallet of CDs with hand-written titles, and a notepad and pen. Arguably, it is the last two items that hold the key to his monumental success.

And what a success it is. David Guetta is truly the biggest DJ the world has ever seen (and not just because DJ Magazine crowned him No.1 DJ in the world last week). The numbers speak for themselves. Twenty-five million Facebook fans, two million Twitter followers, and over half a billion views on YouTube. (He is one of the most watched people on planet Earth.) He sells millions of records. He DJs in stadiums of up to 80,000 people. Somehow, “superstar DJ” doesn’t quite sum it up.

How did he get here? Guetta says he has spent his whole career searching for the perfect dance beat. His perseverance in the studio has made him one of the most in-demand producers on the planet. His collaborations with hip-hop’s biggest stars have certainly helped his profile, particularly in the US. But it is his famous perfectionism, embodied by the fact that he never DJs without his notepad and pen, that is the engine of his success.

“I was so excited when I was introduced to him in Tokyo a few years back,” explained Uffie of their collaboration. “I knew if there was ever the right track I would have to ask him to be on it, and this was that track and, fortunately, he said yes.”

Swedish House Mafia top the charts with ‘One’

The unstoppable Swedish House Mafia trio of Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Axwell flew straight to No.1 on Beatport this week, with the aptly titled single ‘One’.

Believe it or not, ‘One’ is the first track the supergroup have released together under the Swedish House Mafia name and its success is yet further proof that they are one of the biggest acts in dance music today, on the brink of mainstream recognition.

The Swedish House Mafia recently signed to major label EMI, and ‘One’ was the highlight of their headline performance in front of 50,000 clubbers at Miami’s Ultra Festival during the Winter Music Conference at the end of March (watch the video below to see how it went down).

James Zabiela interview

James Zabiela [a] released his brand new Renaissance mix compilation ‘Life’ today, which the British DJ and producer believes is his strongest mix CD effort to date.

Unlike previous mix CDs, James compiled and mixed the compilation as one single soundtrack, rather than two separate mixes, and although the mix had to be divided onto two CDs, James feels it plays out like one single “epic mix”.

We caught up with the technical DJ whiz to find out more, and we’ve linked up the tracklist track-by-track to make it easy for our DJ readers to listen and buy the tracks James used for his compilation.

Two faced Fedde Le Grand and his Toolroom mix

Fedde Le Grand [a] has just released a new mix compilation for Toolroom, which showcases the Dutch star’s split studio personality.

One CD, mixed under his alias FLG, pushes a dark and heady club sound, with peak time bombs coming from Daniel Portman, Solomun, and Mark Mendes. The mix pulsates with late night trips and fist pumping bass monsters.

The other CD, which comes from Fedde Le Grand simply, pushes uplifting progressive house and electro from the likes of Hauswerks and Mark Knight.

Confused by the difference? We were too, so we asked Fedde to guide us through his favourite tracks in the mix, to help explain the two paths he seems to find himself exploring in equal measure these days.

Axwell’s new video for TV Rock ‘In The Air’

Here’s the new video for Axwell’s recent hit remix ‘In The Air’, which has just been snapped up by Ministry of Sound’s offshoot label Data Records for re-release in May.

Originally produced by Australian dance music duo TV Rock [a], Axwell signed and remixed the track on his Axtone Records [l] back in June 2009.
