Canada’s Finest House

Hi-Bias Records, one of Canada’s premier dance labels, is behind what they are billing as the “first-ever original album featuring Canada’s top dance and electronica artists and producers”.

Not before time we say with the wealth of great dance artists to be found just north of America!

The Smoker

Shimon, Sparfunk [Audio Porn]

The classily-titled Audio Porn record label spurts back into life with two sexual cuts from Shimon and the ex-Moving Fusion member Sparfunk.

‘The Smoker’ could be inspired by Shimon’s collapsed lung – a condition that’s affflicted him for a while now.

Romania festival review: Sunwaves, Mamaia

You don’t earn your clubbing stripes without pulling off an entire weekend’s partying on an implausible amount of sleep.

After salvaging a few hours in bed of what was left of Saturday (post-Lee Burridge’s Herculean DJ’ing effort the night/day before) we headed back up to the Northern end of Mamaia in order to catch the final evening fling of the Sunwaves Festival.

Headlining tonight was the irrepressible Cadenza boss Luciano along with a selection of his loyal, musical subjects.

The curious popularity of trance

Trance is a joke to some, but to others it is the embodiment of pure dance music.

Its obvious build-ups, huge breakdowns and serotonin-laced synths are cheesy to many, but there’s a much bigger majority that love it.

For years people have slated trance, made fun of its glowstick-wielding, furry leg warmer-wearing fans and dismissed its faithful followers as kids who wouldn’t know decent dance music if they put their heads in a bass bin.

And yet, trance’s enduring popularity continues to grow. And grow.

Its DJs fill stadiums, are sponsored by mega brands and even have sneakers named after them (Adidas made a line of trainers in honour of DJ Tiësto).

I think it’s about time there was an honest and frank discussion about trance and its popularity, rather than slag it off and ignore it yet again.

Dissonanze roundup

In hindsight, Dissonanze was insane whichever way I look at it.

48 hours of intensity - music, alcohol, thousands of thrill seekers - all jammed into one super-technical venue, but was it really any good?

‘Godfather’ celebrates its 10 years of partying, Tokyo

“Godfather” is a club night that started off as a super underground deep house party in 1998 at Club Milk (now gone) in Ebisu, Tokyo.

It was initiated by Ukawa Naohiro, a visual artist/ VJ/ writer/ professor/ ex-Mixrooffice owner, and he teamed up with two local DJs who seemed to have the deepest understanding of the deepest house music: Tohru Takahashi and Moodman (all are pictured, from left to right).

The intention was to explore into the dark and dangerous side of house music.

Machine Funk 004

Q-Project [Machine Funk]

The ironically-titled ‘Jungle Is Dead’ from Machine Funk 004 comes from the same producer who co-wrote a “Hardcore Will Never Die” remix nearly eight years ago.

Considering that the genre known as hardcore preceded jungle, perhaps Q-Project is seeing life through a different perspective these days?

Super Mal travels ‘Light Years’

Super Mal’s previous singles ‘Bigger Bigger’ and the vocal version ‘Bigger Than Big’ were heavily influenced by the likes of Daft Punk and Mylo, and whilst many others have staked claims to that fact, few have delivered the goods worthy of a place alongside their heroes.

Super Mal more then do with their latest Bandito Records release, ‘Light Years’, offering the most simplistic of grooves that is as familiar as it is original with Gallic reference points aplenty.

‘Deep Dish not over’ says Dubfire

Our good friends from Australian dance music portal inthemix.com.au uploaded an interesting bit of news today: Dubfire has revealed that his Deep Dish partnership with Sharam is not over just yet.

“I have definitely tapped into a new part of myself, and I think Sharam has as well,” Dubfire told inthemix.

“And I think once we decide that the time is right to get back in the saddle and work on new material, it’s going to be a new creative peak for Deep Dish.”

Dubfire said he may join studio hands again with Sharam at some point in 2009.

Final: Beatport Stage line-up for Movement 2008 in Detroit

The full line-up for Movement 2008 (the festival formerly known as DEMF) is revealed for the artists performing on the Beatport Stage for the entire weekend.

The annual affair, taking place on the riverside of Hart Plaza in the heart of downtown Detroit over Memorial Day Weekend, features artists heard on a premium sound system from both near and far.

This year’s roster is proving to be far more diverse and wide-ranging than ever.

In addition to the previously announced artist line-up that includes original DEMF co-founder Carl Craig, Cobblestone Jazz, DBX (Daniel Bell), Egyptian Lover and Speedy J, the Beatport Stage adds both more established and up-and-coming acts into the mix.

Some of the artists appearing on the Beatport Stage this year include live sets from Par Grindvik, Deadmau5, Alex Under, Heartthrob and Mathias Kaden, plus DJ appearances by Konrad Black, Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Davide Squillace, Josh Wink, Dubfire and more.

The full Beatport Stage line-up for Movement 2008 is found after the jump.

Our Music Culture Explained

Based off my experiences old and new, I have decided to write a small break down / observation of how I view our music industry.

Without telling you who I am other than that my name is Jon, I’ve been a “professional” house producer for over five years, DJing for about nine.

My first record was in 2003, and since then I have had about 40-some odd releases, have been on some top-name DJ CDs, yadda yadda.

I have never been the greatest producer in the land—far from it—however, I have always thought of myself as consistent and true to my sound.

So that’s me, in a nut shell.

Chainsaw

DJ Fresh [Violence Recordings]

DJ Fresh is a drum & bass legend, and the man is still young.

How he could have achieved so much at this stage in his career is quite remarkable and, interestingly, now that he’s reached this rare plateau, he can try new things creatively, starting with ‘Chainsaw’.

London Clubs: Bass in the Place London

Recently I have ventured out to some of London’s new clubs.

They have all been very nice, which is better than just being shit.

However, I have begun to notice a worrying trend, they have all been very quiet.
