Our Music Culture Explained

Based off my experiences old and new, I have decided to write a small break down / observation of how I view our music industry.

Without telling you who I am other than that my name is Jon, I’ve been a “professional” house producer for over five years, DJing for about nine.

My first record was in 2003, and since then I have had about 40-some odd releases, have been on some top-name DJ CDs, yadda yadda.

I have never been the greatest producer in the land—far from it—however, I have always thought of myself as consistent and true to my sound.

So that’s me, in a nut shell.

Chainsaw

DJ Fresh [Violence Recordings]

DJ Fresh is a drum & bass legend, and the man is still young.

How he could have achieved so much at this stage in his career is quite remarkable and, interestingly, now that he’s reached this rare plateau, he can try new things creatively, starting with ‘Chainsaw’.

Luciano interview: The Romanian Connection

Chilean Luciano is the king of the underground, a talented producer and DJ considered to be a house and techno master by many clubbers and DJs across the globe.

As resident DJ of Circoloco in DC10, Ibiza, and as boss of the influential label Cadenza, Luciano has built up a huge following of dedicated fans who worship his genre-defying sets of bouncy minimal, groovy house and techno classics.

Whilst Berlin and Ibiza have fallen in love with Luciano (and his sexy moustache), in Romania he’s practically a king - no other European country welcomes Luciano as much as the Romanians.

As part of Beatportal’s autopsy of Romania’s club scene we met Luciano backstage at Sunwaves festival in Romania, to find out his thoughts on Romania, its club culture, and its future.

Read on for the full interview.

Body Language @ Dissonanze

Watch Booka Shade’s epochal ‘Body Language’ drive the Dissonanze crowd wild.

This was the last track of their memorable set, and Arno is visibly exhausted and moved after bashing his digital pads like a madman.

Walter looks fine, though - perhaps because he was only using his fingers!

Competition: ToughDrive daily giveaway!

Beatport, Beatsource and Beatportal have teamed up with Tuneskeeper to give away two 160GB Freecom ToughDrives every day through May 22nd!

With digital music collections taking up so much space and DJs moving more and more towards higher quality WAVs (with larger file sizes), Freecom’s ToughDrive offers a 160GB rock solid hard drive with an internal anti-shock mechanism (which can withstand falling from two meters).

The shock protected 2.5” hard drive has a built-in USB 2.0 cable and is the smart choice for DJs looking for plenty of storage space and a secure and stable foundation.

Read on to find out how to enter the prize draw!

Total Science come hard with the ‘Sektor 8’ EP, boasting a 2007 “ReRub” of their awesome ‘Dubplate’ remix.

Lee Burridge drops ‘Hale Bopp’ in Romania

Here’s a video I filmed from the DJ booth at La Mania in Romania, that shows DJ Lee Burridge dropping Der Dritte Raum’s classic progressive techno track ‘Hale Bopp’ which went down in a storm.

The reason why the camera is a bit dodgy is because I couldn’t stop dancing, sorry about that.

Thomas Schwartz returns with ‘A New Society’

It was only a few short months ago that we extolled the virtues of Thomas Schwartz‘s Jupiter Calling’, co-created with producer Fanizza Fausto of Starchaser fame.

No sooner had word of our glowing praise got back to their camp in the Apulia Region of Italy, than the duo headed back to the studio to record the follow-up with a mission to wow us all the more.

IRR: Areal’s new sub-label kicks off

For the last 8 years, Areal has been charming and teasing listeners with its playful brand of lo-fi techno from a core of artists including Ada, Metope and Basteroid.

For their latest project, the crew have started International Rhythm Recordings as an outlet for all the other artists, styles and obscure tracks they get sent that don’t quite fit the Areal remit.

Their first release, from Ireland’s John Daly (pictured), has proved a hit with deep house, space disco and modern techno heads alike, so we caught up with the delectable Ada to find out what IRR has in store.

You can read what she had to say after the jump.

Stealing Thor’s Thunder – Part 1: Oscillators

When it comes to raw synthesis power, it’s almost an understatement to say that Propellerheads’ Reason and Ableton Live have become the dominant tools for many - some might say “most” - producers.

With the introduction of Reason 4 last fall, a new synth was added to Reason’s arsenal.

Cheekily named Thor, this new synth is quite possibly one of the most powerful options available for complex sound design.

It’s complex enough that it even warrants its own tutorials.

So let’s begin hammering out the specifics of Thor.

Carl Craig cancels Mutek appearance citing ‘family reasons’

Residentadvisor has the scoop on Carl Craig canceling his planned appearance at this year’s Mutek festival in Montreal, due to family reasons.

Carl Craig fans will be pretty disappointed as the Detroit techno wizard has been on fire recently: just check out the YouTube clip we found of Carl Craig at the recent Awakenings in The Netherlands - techno heaven!

Carl Craig was due to play the main room of Nocturne 4 at Metropolis on Saturday night, but Radio Slave has now been brought in to take over his slot alongside French minimal techno artist Danton Eeprom.

Get Physical’s Nôze will now play in Radio Slave’s original slot at Sunday’s Piknic 2.

Pan-Pot Remixe

Pan-Pot [Mobilee]

Pan-Pot’s ‘Black Gold’ album went down a treat with fans of the duo’s stark, archetypically Berliner minimalism, and emerged as one of the minimal techno scene’s most talked about albums of 2007.

Here, the label offers a pair of revisions that widen the appeal, incorporating classic, dub-infused techno influences and a smattering of psychedelic funk, pulling Pan-Pot’s originals out of the minimal quagmire.

Video: Cobblestone Jazz set @ Dissonanze festival

Cobblestone Jazz cooked up the most aurally stimulating, original, hypnotic, warm, thumping set you could possibly image at the Dissonanze festival - it was perhaps even better than Booka Shade’s.

Let my cameraman Vlad “The Mic” Impaler take you on a journey across the Dissonanze dance floor - a place where your eyes and ears will melt with pleasure.

Pendulum’s new album at No. 1 in midweek UK album chart

Pendulum - the group who revolutionised the sound of drum & bass much like The Prodigy did to hardcore in the early ‘90s - are currently at No. 1 in the midweek UK album charts.

Whether they are drum & bass artists anymore is a hot subject of debate, as is evident on forums such as dogsonacid, but what is not in dispute is that their music is loved by tens if not hundreds of thousands of fans.
