Digging for disco gold with Chromeo

Chromeo, the self-styled only successful Jew/Arab partnership since the dawn of time, have shaken hips from Montreal to Mecca ever since the release of their LP, ‘She’s In Control’, on Tiga’s Turbo Records.

Musical love-making is the name of their game, with seductive synths and virile vocoders as the aural equivalent of oysters and champagne.

Their recent notch in the acclaimed DJ-Kicks bedpost sees libido levels rise through the roof, and in celebration of this conquest, the Canadian crooners have selected nine of their top Beatport tunes for that extra bit of oh la la.

2009: The year of disco?

In a glum 21st Century epoch of economic crisis, political unrest and nuclear menace, it is perhaps unsurprising that the style of music most feted for its pure, unadulterated sense of fun has crept its way, with a side-step shuffle and a double handclap, back onto dance-floors across the globe.

As melody replaces minimal as the buzz du jour, it is the dancing that once again takes centre stage leaving the uber-koolische backs slumped forlorn against the wall.

We are, of course, talking about D.I.S.C.O..

While some might argue that disco has never truly been away –hip-hop and house producers in particular have long plundered its resources to furnish their sample-laden oeuvre– surely the glitter-ball hasn’t shone as brightly over a scene since its infamous ‘demolition’ in 1979 as it has over the last two years.

Despite often being saddled with the annoyingly constricted ‘nu’ prefix, contemporary disco is a deceptively broad school encompassing a variety of quirky sub-genres. Whether your proverbial flavour is breezy balearica, irreverent italo or butt-shaking boogie, you can find it all down at the (nu) Discotheque.

In celebration of this musical renaissance we have profiled and interviewed some of disco’s brightest new stars. Clap-clap.

Phoenix rises from French house’s ashes

Music is all about ownership. Everyone gets a kick from discovering a certain tune, band or DJ first – unearthing that gem they’re going to bring up a few years later in a fit of cavalier bragging. You know the type: “I got that Prodigy track when it was still on white label, mate!”, or “I saw Greg Wilson at the Hacienda when you were still in nappies, son!”

Yes, in the world of music, it seems perfectly acceptable to appropriate other people’s work in order to make yourself seem cooler.

In that very unashamed way, I ‘owned’ Phoenix for a while. Back in 2000 whilst channel-hopping I happened to land on MTV2 and came across this swaggering French hipster band crooning over dulcet disco beats. I dropped the remote immediately and gave a double-clap of approval. I was 15-years-old at the time.

Ten Minutes with Tensnake

In a country famed for industrial-sized techno beats, Tensnake [a] must be considered one of Germany’s more idiosyncratic producers.

Hailing from Hamburg, Marco Niemerski has spent four active years on the scene developing a rather unique brand of dance music and commanding increasingly more respect and admiration along the way.

His sumptuously warm melodies, interwoven with bountiful rococo grooves, are best served with a Piña Colada while the sun sets on one of those languid summer days at the beach.

Meeting…disco flag bearers Permanent Vacation

Contrary to what their label name might well suggest, Tom Bioly and Benjamin Frölich are far from being a couple of layabouts enjoying a long holiday.

As commanders in chief, A&R execs, CEOs, WTFs, OMGs, LOLs, and so on and so forth, of Munich-based label, Permanent Vacation, they have championed the renaissance of the disco genre and led the way, hips-shaking, hands-clapping, in the fight against the mope-around minimal movement.

To say the rise of Permanent Vacation [l] has been meteoric would not be far off the mark.

It was only back in 2006 that Bioly and Frölich’s lovechild was first conceived. Yet their very first label anthology, ‘Selected Label Works N°1’, boasts a wealth of contemporary classics from the likes of Todd Terje, Tensnake, Sally Shapiro and Aeroplane which proves that the label has massive pulling, as well as staying, power.

We caught up with the Bavarian boys to talk about, amongst other things, angels wearing Brazilian bikinis. It was cosmic…

The Deep End

Curses! [Institubes]

Luca Venezia – aka NYC’s bassline champion Drop The Lime [a] – returns with a swagger to the Institubes stage behind his housier guise, Curses! [a], to offer a TWA (tune wiv attiude) that will smack you round the face and leave your sorry ass battered and bruised.

That’s a good thing, though. Forget all this softly-softly dance music that wouldn’t even offend your Grandma these days, ‘The Deep End’ sticks it to the man, middle finger up, jeans ripped, nipple pierced.

FXHE Catalogue

Omar S [FXHE Records]

Beneath his notorious, expletive-filled bravado – more befitting of the muthafuckin’ streetz of CPT than his celebrated hometown of Detroit – we at Beatport have been privileged enough to see a softer side to Omar S.

How could we have anything bad to say about the most hyped member of Motor City’s already über-hyped third generation when he celebrates Beatport’s 5th birthday by giving us his entire oeuvre to date on an exclusive basis?!

The Rat Race (Siriusmo Remix)

Munk [Gomma]

Munk [a] has been keeping the carrot well-and-truly dangled ever since the release of last year’s acclaimed Cloudbuster LP.

A series of remixes from the likes of WhoMadeWho [a], The Juan Maclean [a] and Ed Banger Allstars has ensured that appetites are sufficiently whetted for this latest installment – a glammed-up rework of The Rat Race by Berlin wunderkind, Siriusmo [a].

Volcano

Egotrya [People Of The Sky]

Back when Marty McFly was still jamming to Huey Lewis and the News, Beppe Loda and Francesco Boscolo were getting their musical kicks from an altogether different era – the future.

Fitting then, that Volcano should re-enter the public consciousness some 25 years later; bearing testament to their own time travelling capabilities.
