Japan: Ricardo Villalobos to close the 10th Wire Festival this weekend

It’s a busy time of the year for techno heads in Japan.

Every year, once you recover from Metamorphose, it’s followed by the biggest indoor techno rave in the country, Wire.

To many, it’s the last blast that symbolises the end of summer.

Having started in ‘99, the event usually draws about 15,000 to 18,000 people, and this year it celebrates the 10th anniversary with a slew of both Japanese and international talent, from very underground to very well known.

Wire ‘08 is taking place at Yokohama Arena on Saturday, August 30th.

Wally Lopez unleashes ‘Grindhouse (Dubfire’s Planet Terror Mix)’ at Space Ibiza

In this second installation of Wally Lopez at Space Ibiza, we see him dropping this menacing techno killer that’s been getting caned by nearly everyone from Hawtin to Nic Fanciulli - Radio Slave featuring Danton Eeprom ‘Grindhouse (Dubfire’s Planet Terror Mix)’.

This release coincidentally tops “The 20”, Beatportal’s selection of most influential new releases for the month.

Bar Rumba relaunch finally gives Central London techno

Considering how many bars and clubs there are in central London, there’s a pathetic amount of credible electronic music nights in the centre of the city.

Basically there are none. But Bar Rumba on Shaftsbury Avenue (just off Piccadilly Circus) is set to host a newly refreshed music program that will include some of London’s most credible techno nights like Zombies Ate My Brain, Leftroom Records [check out their releases in the player below], Latenightaudio and LT Editions.

The question is, will London’s hardcore dance music fans venture into the area which is known only for its annoying tourists?

Free Moog patches from Propellerhead

Last week, Propellerhead Software – makers of the ever-ubiquitous Reason – quietly released a free Moog-inspired ReFill for registered users of Reason.

The Moog Foundation ReFill is a collection of Thor patches designed by synth gurus Mark Vail, Craig Anderton and Gordon Reid.

The idea behind releasing the Moog-flavored ReFill is to generate awareness for the Moog Foundation, whose stated purpose is, in their own words:

“The mission of The Bob Moog Foundation is to document, celebrate and teach innovative thinking and to support and honor the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog. Our four long range goals are: scholarship, outreach programs, unique community events and a Bob Moog Museum.”

Beatport

As always, this Beatport Burner is an ‘enhanced’ podcast, which means each track in the mix has a track mark and shows the release artwork, so when you listen to it in iTunes or your iPod you’ll be able to skip through tracks, see the cover art and click through to Beatport should you wish to buy the release.

It’s the easiest way for DJs to do record shopping!

The future of DJing?

Feast your eyes on the world’s first touch-screen decks.

No, these aren’t the product of a major corporation like Vestax or Technics, they are in fact the brainchild of a design student in Dundee, Scotland.

Wolfgang Voigt plays the piano

Kompakt’s head honcho Wolfgang Voigt is on a roll at the moment.

After he re-released his four genre-defining GAS albums and a luxurious GAS photo-book a few months ago, and after reuniting with Jörg Burger (aka The Modernist) as Burger & Ink - oops, Burger & Voigt - he has revived his old label Profan which had been defunct for eight years.

And guess what, he is playing the piano.

Interview with Alex Smoke

Alex Smoke is finally releasing a new EP on the Berlin label Vakant in September, but it might not be what you’re expecting.

Known for his knack for producing minimal beats with inventive and melodic arrangements that hover on the darker sides of emotion, this Glasgow-based producer answered a few of our questions about the nature of this new release.

Behind Sasha’s ‘Involver 2’

British mag IDJ has an interesting piece on Sasha this month, in which the veteran British DJ discusses the six hard months of work that went into his new ‘Involver 2’ album, called ‘Invol2ver’.

As well as including field recordings of New York’s streets in his mix, Sasha also hunted down 40 guitar pedals on eBay which he then used to design sounds.

Stoking the Engine: Dick Drone releases the ‘Engine Room’ remixes EP

One thing the Tokyo-based 2-member outfit Dick Drone is missing is honesty.

That’s because one member also makes electronic music under a different alias, and would prefer to remain anonymous here.

The other member can’t quite vocalize the truth either, because she’s only two and a half years old…

Eric Prydz ‘Pjanoo’ set for No.2 in UK charts

Eric Prydz is a master of timing. His single ‘Pjanoo’ is set to smash into the UK charts this week at No.2, after destroying dancefloors in Ibiza for the last few weeks.

Originally released on Happy Music, ‘Pjanoo’ became a hot record for DJs like Pete Tong on the island, and now that the record has been snapped up by Ministry of Sound’s sub label Data the charts beckon.

This could be Eric Prydz’ third UK Top 10 record, as ‘Call On Me’ and ‘Proper Education’ reached No.1 and No.2 consecutively.
