Kompakt’s Tobias Thomas talks c/o Pop in Cologne

It feels like the dust has finally settled after last weekend’s c/o Pop festival in Cologne, the city’s 5-day mix of conferences and parties that mixes business with pleasure in finest local style.

We caught up with acclaimed Kompakt DJ Tobias Thomas, who works closely with the festival to put together the event line-up, to find out how this year’s c/o Pop went.

Arthur Oskan’s upcoming releases and tour announcement

Arthur Oskan (a.k.a.Myers Briggs), Toronto’s live PA wonder, is making some serious leaps forward in the national and even international music scene as a notable producer.

His ‘Resolutions EP’ topped Alan Oldham’s chart for Tresor (Berlin), and his track ‘Forever’ has also been celebrated by James Holden, Nic Fanciulli, and Hernan Cattaneo.

Today he has just given us word that this month he is signing an administrative licensing deal with Fabricpublishing.com that could really open the door further for him to secure placement of his evocative and emotive music in advertisements, in television or in film soundtracks.

Recently he also completed a remix for Claudio Mate’s release ‘Everything is OK in Detroit’ which is due out by early September.

Not only is Arthur Oskan making heads turn and ears perk with his intricate epic sounding tracks, (his nine-minute long ‘Forever’ currently appears on John Digweed’s ‘Transmission Vol. 4’ compilation), but Oskan’s original tracks are found on labels including Sentient Sound, Beretta, Thoughtless Music, Restructured, Heavy Industries, Secret Weapon and Mono.

Beatport caught up with Arthur Oskan a.k.a. Myers Briggs from his home in Toronto to gain perspective on his work and to hear about his exciting plans for the fall.

Scientists: ‘Dance music is good for you’

Egg heads in the UK and Germany have discovered that listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting dance music increases your levels of antibodies.

The scientists from Sussex University and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany also found that stress hormone levels, which can weaken the immune system, decreased after a dose of dance music.

Hard house is still breathing

On a recent trip to Taiwan, I was staggered to find out that hard house dominated clubs up and down the country - they’re a decade behind the rest of the world.

Little old me - playing my tech house - raised a few eyebrows to say the least.

I thought hard house was but a faded memory - like some sort if horrible nightmare about murdering someone and the police chasing you, that you were relieved to wake up from - but it’s still breathing and in fact very, very real.

I think the video above says it all really - this is how I view hard house - it all sounds the same to me.

Product Spotlight: iZotope iDrum for iPhone

Now that the iPhone 2.0 software has finally reached a semi-stable state, it’s time to start digging into the music applications.

Of all the programs we’ve checked out in recent weeks, there’s one real standout: iZotope’s iDrum.

Originally developed as a drum machine plug-in for OS X – and later Windows – iDrum has developed something of a cult following among producers, thanks to its friendly UI and straightforward operation.

Porting iDrum to the iPhone (and iPod Touch) presents some unique challenges that have proven problematic for several other manufacturers, largely due to the iPhone’s tiny screen.

But iZotope has obviously given these challenges considerable thought, because they’ve taken classic drum machine programming tools and turned them on their ear, resulting in the most effective interface we’ve seen to date.

Interview with Stefan Goldmann

The Berlin-based producer Stefan Goldmann has always had a thing for eerie soundscapes and textures.

For his debut album which is coming out in September, he explored this love for dark ambient and multi-layered soundscapes even further, taking it beyond the dancefloor.

‘Voices Of The Dead’ as the album is aptly called, dives deep into the realm of multi-layered sound experimentation and electro-acoustic composition. Showing the producer’s experimental side on a full-length album.

But of course there is also the dance music producer Stefan Goldmann, who produced hits like ’Sleepy Hollow’ or ’Lunatic Finge’, which moved dancefloors worldwide.

After giving it a little thought, the Macro label boss combined both aspects of his productions on two CDs.

So we have the compilation of his dance tracks, previously only available on vinyl on one CD – which is called ‘The Transitory State’, and the second CD (‘Voices Of The Dead’), which features his take on electro-acoustic composition.

Reasons enough to ask him a few questions.

Kilimanjaro not enough for Andrea Parker, volcanoes next

After successfully climbing to the 5,895m summit of Kilimanjaro last year for charity, British techno musician Andrea Parker has set her sights on tackling the world’s highest active volcano, Mt. Cotopaxi (5,897m), and three other volcanoes: Pasochoa, El Corazon and Liniza.

“Much of the final climb is on the glacier of Mt. Cotopaxi,” Andrea Parker told Beatportal, whilst chewing on a block of concrete.
