Video: Riz MC shows Kanye West how to do proper electronic rap

When news surfaced that Kanye West had decided to flirt with electronic music on his new album ‘808 & Heartbreak’ we hoped it would be an edgy and electronic-based rap LP, but were disappointed to find that the electronic music elements were nothing more than some hideous vocoded-vocals that sounded like a robot was being sapped of its energy.

British rapper Riz MC on the other hand shows exactly how rap and electronic music can be fused on his brilliant new single ‘Radar’ on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels.

Kanye West, please pay attention.

PromoOne: The future of electronic music promotion arrives

Back in the days before digital, DJs used to be sent promo records through the post. Some of it was decent, but a lot of it was crap.

Then when digital arrived, the promos started arriving via email as downloadable links.

The problem was, anybody with your email address could send you promos even if you didn’t want them, and sorting through them became a nightmare.

That’s what Beatport’s new promo service, PromoOne, aims to fix.

Having beta launched last month, PromoOne offers DJs and labels with a way to connect in order to promote good electronic music.

Feature: Getting Familiar with Sinden

While a lot of DJs might mention Detroit or Chicago as a key influence of their music, the star of Fabric’s latest mix CD is a little different.

Graeme Sinden grew up around Kent and Essex in satellite towns near London. As a kid his stereo was tuned to the drum & bass and two step garage sounds that gave London such a unique input into dance music.

Now in the naughties, along with a new twentysomething generation of producers like Hervé or Duke Dumont he’s helping to update the vibe of the bass heavy sounds of London from the mid 1990s into an altogether more exciting musical melting pot.

His ‘Fabric Live 43’ mix is an x-ray image of the sound of London 2008, weaving from grime and dubstep through to world music and bassline house and electro.

We decided to interview Sinden about Fabric, junglism, and what partying in a Brazilian favela is really like.

The Rogue Element [Exceptional Reco...

The Rogue Element used to be the guy on speed dial for top of the range remixes, so much so that he even vocally expressed his anxiety towards making his own productions.

Once the winner of such accolades as ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’, ‘Best Album’ and ‘Best Remix’ at successive Breakspoll Awards, The Rogue Element has returned to the fold in 2009 to make his mark as much more than a breaks producer and hot remixer.

Great Matters EP

His Majesty Andre [Cheaper Thrills]...

Italian producer His Majesty Andre has dropped a couple of interesting house bangers this year, but the claims that he’s the next big Italian star are a little premature.

His new ‘Great Matters’ EP on Herve’s hot new label Cheaper Thrills however does show a high level of consistency and an exciting and varied approach to house music that suggests a bright future may lay ahead - all four tracks on the EP are certainly accomplished.

Breakage [Digital Soundboy Recordin...

This year has definitely been a ‘feeeeeling good’ one; what with Johnny D taking the Nina Simone track and turning it into a massive minimal anthem, and Dutch d&b duo CLS and Wax rinsing their liquid homage to the soul legend later on in the summer.

Nina now gets the dubstep treatment, courtesy of Breakage (what old Simone would have made of it, no one will ever know).

RA hands DJ poll decision over to its users

This year our friends over at RA have decided to place the decision of their Top DJ 2008 poll in the hands of their users.

The poll had previously been made up by their contributors voting on individual DJ performances, with Ricardo Villalobos coming out on top of the pile last year.

However, the decision will now be solely left to all users who registered before November 18th, mainly in a bid to outline the multiple registrations, fake email accounts and IP switch voting that charcterises so many of these public votes.

Feature: Efdemin breaks his silence

Patience is a virtue, but often in electronic music when artists hit the big time and record label offers come flooding in they take the money and ride the hype wave until the end.

Not Efdemin. Since his self-titled debut album blew up last year (it was voted one of the finest albums of 2007), we haven’t heard a bleep or a beat of original material from Phillip Sollmann for nearly 18 months.

Efdemin finally decided to break his silence two weeks ago with a new EP ‘America/The Pulse’ on Belgian label Curle Recordings, and quickly followed up with his debut mix album ‘Carry On - Pretend We Are Not In The Room’ on the same label.

Both releases see Efdemin back at the top of his game, so Beatportal sent Sven von Thülen to Berlin to find out where Efdemin has been hiding.
