Bacala

Stephan Hinz [Audiomatique Records]...

Berliner Stephan Hinz says on his MySpace page: “I really love music from people like Apparat, Sigur Ros, Coldplay, Barry White, Rachmaninov, Bela Bartok and so many more.

“It’s a big failure to confine oneself to just one genre or something like that...I try to listen to as much as I can.

“It’s so fantastic and exciting to find something you never heard before or something you heard a long time ago but with other ears.”

As a DJ and radio show host for his own show ‘Dasding Plattenleger’ on Berlin stations SWR DASDING and SR UNSERDING, Hinz listens to a lot of music in addition to producing his own.

Now Hinz has just completed a new EP called ‘Bacala’ on Audiomatique Records.

JPLS on his new ‘Combination EP’ for Minus

JPLS made his first Minus appearance on 2006’s ‘min2MAX’ compilation.

He also performed live that year in Detroit for the ‘min2MAX’ launch showcase.

JPLS’ sound is cerebral and heady dub-infused techno that is strictly experimental but dancefloor oriented.

His latest release in September this year is the ‘Combination EP’, which follows his ‘Twilite’ release on Minus (check the EP in the player below).

We like JPLS’ style a lot, so we grabbed him for a few questions.

Meet the French jesters, dOP

The trio dOP are the latest French sensation, but unlike Justice or Daft Punk, or disco house or any other French sound that might come to your mind, dOP sound more like Nôze.

Beatportal grabs Dam from dOP to ask him some questions, but it ends up turning into a joke fest.

Last weekend in Toronto Misstress Barbara performed one of the first live performances to showcase the work from her upcoming artist album entitled ‘I’m No Human’ which will be properly released in 2009.

On stage, Misstress Barbara did the vocals and programming, and her new band mates pitched in.

Mathieu Brault was on bass guitar, and Matai Dubus was on keyboards.

Even as a DJ, Misstress Barbara had a strong almost theatrical stage presence.

Her energy levels are high and as a singer she was no less intense than would be expected.

An interview with the director of Berlin Calling: Hannes Stoehr

Berlin Calling is a melodramatic tragic comedy set in the world’s most recognizable and bustling hub of dance music activity today.

It is brilliantly done as it depicts Berlin’s underground techno scene, with DJ Ickarus at the centre of it all.

He’s engaged in the scene with all of its glory – full of hedonism - dancing, music, sex, and drugs.

To create the film set, real clubs in Berlin were rented out for film shoots.

From Bar 25 and Maria Club, to scenes from Alexanderplatz U-bahn station, the film Berlin Calling certainly makes no disguise of the place, and Berlin is a real character.

Reality is what is aimed at and achieved by director Hannes Stoehr in his third feature length film.

In conversation with Hannes after his appearance and the screening of Berlin Calling during the Toronto International Film Festival, Hannes explained a bit more about the making of Berlin Calling.

Review: North American premiere of Berlin Calling with Paul Kalkbrenner

Sunday night in Toronto during the Toronto International Film Festival in the heart of downtown (Little Italy to be exact), Paul Kalkbrenner stood outside of the Royal Theatre as people lined up to go inside.

He, as the star actor, along with film director Hannes Stohr of the new film Berlin Calling, waited in anticipation of the North American premiere of their film.

The rogue screening organizers, Platform Events and Xanuradio.com were bustling around – promoting, and doing press releases and media outreach - earlier that week up until the last minute to ensure that things went smoothly.

That night as people entered the theatre and seats began to fill, the anticipation started to dissipate.

It was clear that the screening would be well-attended by electronic music fans in Toronto.

Berlin Calling to have independent North American premiere separate from TIFF

What a shock! After successful premieres at both the Lacarno International Film Festival and the Hamburg Film Festival this summer, on Sunday, September 7th the film Berlin Calling will be have its North American premiere in a parallel independent screening at the same time that the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) takes place.

However, much to the surprise of people who’ve had the pleasure of pre-screening the film (myself included), Berlin Calling was not selected to be part of the official TIFF.

Among all of the top ranking new and sometimes previously award-winning films that make it to the TIFF drawing board, it’s a very tough selection process that the films go through before they arrive on the official TIFF program.
