Kilimanjaro not enough for Andrea Parker, volcanoes next

After successfully climbing to the 5,895m summit of Kilimanjaro last year for charity, British techno musician Andrea Parker has set her sights on tackling the world’s highest active volcano, Mt. Cotopaxi (5,897m), and three other volcanoes: Pasochoa, El Corazon and Liniza.

“Much of the final climb is on the glacier of Mt. Cotopaxi,” Andrea Parker told Beatportal, whilst chewing on a block of concrete.

Podcast: Beatport Burners: Episode 74

Beatport

With the addition of the new Beatport Genrecasts, let’s not forget the weekly staple of Beatport Burners!

This week we’re serving up a fresh mix of 2020 SoundSystem, D Dub, Kaskade & Deadmau5, a Kam Denny & Paul Zala remix of Ce Ce Peniston, SCI+TEC Digital Audio, Compost and more.

As always, this Beatport Burner is an ‘enhanced’ podcast, which means each track in the mix has a track mark and shows the release artwork, so when you listen to it in iTunes or your iPod you’ll be able to skip through tracks, see the cover art and click through to Beatport should you wish to buy the release.

It’s the easiest way for DJs to do record shopping!

Minus takes Contakt to London, but misses Matter, WTF?!

Richie Hawtin’s Minus crew have always had a good relationship with the people behind London’s Fabric club, so Beatportal was rather disappointed to learn that when the techno family brings their groundbreaking Contakt audiovisual club night to London they won’t be presenting it at Fabric’s new club Matter, at The 02 Arena.

Instead Hawtin, Magda, Troy Pierce, Marc Houle, Heartthrob and Gaiser will take over the cavernous old rave venue seOne in London Bridge, which is still a half decent venue when packed, I suppose.

But Minus’ Contakt events are the perfect fit for Matter - in fact, we can’t think of any other club event in the world that would better suit the new futuristic club.

Manchester Producer Gamal Kabar’s debut release on Poker Flat

Also known as St. Sebastian for his work on sister label Dessous, his sound was a lot more refined and polished sounding, and a lot less ravey than on his latest Poker Flat release ‘The Filth’.

His ‘Genetics EP’ and his ‘Drunk Lover EP’, both out on Dessous, are a fine example of his other work.

Gamal Kabar only started producing three years ago and it has been said that his live performances and driving DJ sets are creating a stir in music circles, especially with his new weekly in Ibiza.

The title track on the Poker Flat EP, ‘The Filth’, by Gamal Kabar is a dark track with a seething underground sound about it.

With tweaked out sounds, and standard hands in the air party flair, this track pulls out the stops to be a hit for peak dancefloor hours.

Richie Hawtin loves techno

Richie Hawtin has been flying the flag for techno for over 15 years, from his early releases as F.U.S.E. and Plastikman, to his groundbreaking releases ‘Decks, EFX & 909’ (1999) and ‘DE9: Closer To The Edit’ (2001).

As label boss of Minus, Hawtin has been the driving force behind what is arguably techno’s most successful record label.

Beatportal decided it was about time to pick Richie Hawtin’s brain and find out his inner thoughts about techno, the art of a live performance, and where he sees the future of techno turning.

Danny Howells breaks silence with ‘Mix Collection’ for Renaissance

Despite being a globally-recognised DJ, British jockey Danny Howells has had a surprising lack of solo productions.

His 2004 hit collaboration with Dick Trevor ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ showed he had some serious musical talent behind the deck persona, but since then he’s hardly popped his head into the studio.

That is set to change when Renaissance releases the next installment of their famed ‘The Mix Collection’ series.

As the DJ tasked with compiling the influential mix CD, Danny Howells has included not one, not two, but seven exclusive tracks and remixes.

Another classic house EP: ‘Keep On’ by Berkson and What

London-based duo Dan Berkson & James What follow their last hit for Poker Flat at the start of 2008 with this collaboration which features Robert Owens on vocals.

The ‘Keep On’ original is a straight ahead deep house track with smooth vocals by none other than Chicago house veteran Robert Owens.

This song is a rhythmic imbibe that keeps ones’ toes tapping and feet moving.

The song’s message is one of peace, and anti-war in a way that doesn’t make one think about bad things, but rather all of the good hopeful things in one’s life…

This is a classic tune that can be played until the summer’s lingering end and beyond.

DC10 reopens, at least for the time being

DC10 in Ibiza reopened yesterday in Ibiza, and from the opening party report by Ibiza-Voice, it seems that the crazy circus vibe was back, at least for the moment.

“As seminal as New York’s Paradise Garage or London’s Shoom, Circoloco is our generation’s Studio 54, and it has done more for the musical credibility of Ibiza than any of the hundreds of commercial, predictable, ‘safe’ nights at all the other clubs,” wrote Ibiza-Voice’s Smac.

Shur-i-kan releases new EP on Urban Torque

Tom ‘Shur-i-kan’ Szirtes first made an impact on the Freerange records imprint with the track ‘Niomi’s Dream’ that Tom Middleton spotted for his seminal ‘Jedi’s Night Out’ compilation for Mixmag.

Since then he’s been steadily making a name for himself in electronic production, moving into techy territory on his ‘Berlin Rising EP’ with releases on Physical Graffiti, Defected.

Magda: “Minimal techno is mainstream”

Since her move to Berlin in the early naughties Magda has become one of the world’s biggest techno DJs riding the crest of the boom in underground music.

The Minus star takes a break from her insane touring schedule to answer some questions about her life on the road and why minimal is going all “ticky-ticky-ticky-ticky.”
