Agentina’s minimal man: Barem interview

Meet Baremhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif, real name Mauricio Barembuem.

He’s 24 years-old, and grew up in Buenos Aires so he’s a homeboy.

He looks like a younger Hernan Catteneo, with floppy brown locks and a cheeky smile.

He also speaks perfect English, which isn’t suprising since he spends half his time in Berlin.

Barem happens to be one of the hottest properties in minimal techno currently with releases on Minus, Resopal, Mo’s Ferry and Leftroom.

He’s also been nominated as Best Minimal Artist in the Beatport Music Awards and his remix of Luka & Lazo ‘Dust No.4’ has been nominated for Best Remix of 2007.

We sat down with Barem in Buenos Aires to find out more.

The line-up for SAMC’s big rave looks sweet

We knew that the South American Music Conference was big, but we didn’t realise that the main event has a capacity of 40,000 tonight.

Located inside a giant convention centre, there will be four arenas housing some of the world’s top techno, trance and electro DJs, plus loads of South American talent.

SAMC club review: Beatport presents Bahrain

It’s 5.30am, we’ve been awake for over 48 hours, and we’re still wearing the same clothes we put on on Wednesday morning.

But SAMC’s official opening party was so good, we felt the need to blog about it the moment we came back to the hotel.

That’s called dedication, faithful Beatportal users.

Flying naked into Buenos Aires

The good news is we’ve finally landed in Buenos Aires, 12 hours late.

The bad news is, our luggage hasn’t turned up.

The bags must have got lost somewhere in between Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Buenos Aires.

That means we’re stuck in the clothes we’ve been wearing for the last 30 hours, and it’s starting to smell.

SAMC club review: Aktivism vs. Dual Musik @ Club Cocoliche

As flight issues delay the Beatportal Team from a prompt arrival to the South American Music Conference (SAMC), our spy got the inside peek of the opening night fiesta.

And from the sound of things, he was very happy with the results.

The sun rises over South America

We’d expected to see the sun rise a few times during our trip to the South American Music Conference, but this wasn’t quite what we had in mind.

Behind the glass window of Mexico City International Airport with elevator music just isn’t quite as exciting as the rooftop of a Buenos Aires afterhours club complete with delicate rhythms of Latino-fused techno.

Yep, we’re now in Mexico City, having flown from L.A. in a plane that Mexicana airlines had seemingly made out of bright plastic bricks.

What the hell are we doing in Los Angeles?

Yep, this definitely ain’t right. We’re supposed to be in Buenos Aires, but somehow Continental has buggered up our flight and now we’re in Los Angeles. Whoopee.

L.A. is 6101 miles away from Buenos Aires, so that’s a bit like having sex and your sperm ending up ten blocks away in some poor dude’s soup. Talk about missing the mark distastefully.

In turns out there’s no direct flights left to Buenos Aires from Los Angeles tonight, so our SAMC coverage is going to start late. Sorry folks.

There have been past mutterings that South America could be home to the next Ibiza, but based on this experience we’ve realised it takes a hell of a lot more effort to get there then it does jumping on a Sleazy Jet flight to Ibiza.

When we next blog on Beaportal we might be either:

SAMC - day two

The South American Music Conference (SAMC) in Argentina kicked off this week.

The Beatportal team doesn’t arrive in Buenos Aires until late Thursday, but our spy sent us more details about day two of the activities taking place there, with some photos.

We’ll now look at the second in the series of conferences and ‘how to’ seminars at the music school EMBA.

SAMC lift off

The Beatportal team is sitting at the airport in Houston ready to board our flight to Buenos Aires, for the South American Music Conference.

We’ll be there for five days blogging live from SAMC, and hopefully we’ll discover some exciting new Latin-influenced electronic music, and come back from South America with a firm grasp of the industry, its club scene and the people who make it happen.

We’re all pretty excited.

South America’s electronic music scene really is a world apart from America and Europe’s, metaphorically and physically.

The flight will take over 10 hours which is unbelievable considering that it’s basically just straight down south.

Luckily for us we downloaded loads of music before we left from some South American labels so we could familiarise ourselves with the labels.

There’s some great tracks on Igloo Recordings, check ‘em out after the jump.

SAMC kicks off

The South American Music Conference (SAMC) in Argentina kicked off last night with the first in a series of conferences and ‘how to’ seminars at the music school EMBA.

The Beatportal team (we might call ourselves the B Team) doesn’t arrive in Buenos Aires till Thursday, but we had a spy there and he fed us some info and pics.

SAMC - Zizek is the place for Cumbia music

The Beatportal team arrives in Buenos Aires on Thursday morning for the South American Music Conference, which unfortunately means we’ll be just a few hours too late to check out the city’s infamous Zizek party, which is a hot spot for Cumbia music.

Cumbia is a fusion of old traditional Columbian music with new electronic sounds, and although it used to be considered dance music for the lower classes, it has found fans abroad, including US DJ Diplo [pictured], who likes it so much he’ll be bringing over the Zizek crew for a US tour in March.

SAMC - on the hunt for new music

Whilst Beatportal’s Christen Reutens will be going to the South American Music Conference to analyse the health of the Latin American electronic music scene, I’ll be having a lot more fun listening to new music next week in Argentina.

Specifically, Beatportal wants to find hot new producers and labels from the continent that are doing something unique.

There is loads of excellent music coming out of South America on local labels such as Esperanza, Igloo-Rec, Off Side Recordings and Dual Musik.

Whilst the Internet has given minuscule labels the opportunity to have their tracks heard across the world, we do still think there’s a disproportionate amount of music being highlighted from Europe and America.

So our SAMC live blog will attempt to readdress this imbalance and hopefully we’ll find some glorious new music in the process.

Check out Esperanza’s quality techno in the player after the hop skip.

South America: Boom or Bust?

Next week [March 6th - 10th] the Beatportal team will be reporting live from the South American Music Conference (SAMC) in Argentina, one of the region’s biggest and most important dance music meetings.

There are questions we have about South America’s electronic music scene, many of which we hope will be answered by a trip to Buenos Aires where we’ll meet with some of the most important producers, DJs, promoters and record label owners.

The most pressing question is - Is the continued digitalisation of electronic music undermining the sustainability of the dance scene in a region where music piracy is rife?
