Dubfire closes Sonar 2008

We thought as the perfect wrap up to Sonar 2008 we’d do an exposé on US DJ and producer Dubfirehttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif, who closed out one of big stages at Sonar By Night on Saturday.

Dubfire is something of a controversial artist (just check out the incendiary user comments on this recent Dubfire post), having made the transition from his progressive house days with Deep Dish, to producing underground techno and minimal for labels such as Minushttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gifhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_l.gif and Desolathttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_l.gif.

Many people have criticised Dubfire for making the move into techno—some even believe he only did it because the music is in vogue—but the organisers of Sonar clearly disagree, otherwise they wouldn’t have booked Dubfire for a two-hour headlining slot.

Out of all the large-scale electronic music events in the world, Sonar is probably the most cutting-edge, so the last thing the organisers would do is sponsor an artist who has no credibility.

Beatportal meets Dubfire at his hotel in Barcelona prior to his set, and he seems slightly busy.

Video update: Sasha and John Digweed tour

The last few days have been pretty tough on the Sashahttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif and John Digweedhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif tour.

First Sasha lost his bag containing all the documentation he’d need to cross the Canadian border, so John had to play solo at Kool Haus in Toronto.

Then straight after the Toronto gig we loaded up the bus and drove 10 hours straight to Chicago.

Now we’re in St Louis, Missouri - here’s quick video update I filmed of us loading in for tonight’s show.

A letter of apology to Tommy Lee

Dear Mr. Tommy Lee,

My sincere apologies about puking all over your hotel bathroom last night in Miami. I had drunk a little too much (as is the way during WMC) and had attempted to graciously vomit into the toilet bowl, but unfortunately missed it by a yard or two.

It was a regrettable lack of coordination on my behalf, and for the cleaner of your room a mess that probably will cost you an extra $20 in tip.

Industry Boy’s version of SAMC

Industry Boy’s trip to the South American Music Conference started with some helpful advice from previous visitors to Buenos Aires.

The list of To Dos is short and to the point.

*Eat steak
*Go to an underground afterhours club called Cocoliche
*Meet a beautiful Argentinean girl (there are loads of them apparently)

Steak wouldn’t be a problem and Cocoliche looked like an easy one, so I put all my concentration into the final and most important task.

SAMC club review: Marco Carola @ Bahrein

Bahrein is packed.

Tonight’s main performer, Marco Carolahttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif, caught a leg from Italy to join what’s become this annual event known as SAMC.

And the crowd is clearly appreciative.

London review: RPR Soundsystem @ The End

The queue outside The End tonight confirms the hype that was bubbling all week about RPR Soundsystem’s London premiere.

Messageboards, forums and even the London Paper previewed the Romanian techno threesome’s debut at Waveform’s 6th Birthday.

No doubt because Rareshhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif, Rhadoohttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif and Pedrohttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif are the trio tipped by Hawtin, Luciano and Lee Burridge as the next big thing.

By the time Industry Boy gets downstairs the main room is rocking to RPR’s deep loopy house and techno.

Having heard Rhadoo play at Circoloco at DC10 in Ibiza last summer, I was excited to see if they could do as much dancefloor damage collectively in The End, with its mammoth soundsystem.

“So which one are you?” Industry Boy asks one of the three blokes in the DJ booth, screaming over the frequencies.

“I’m Raresh,” he says, his long shaggy hair flopping over his face.

Amsterdam Dance Event 2007: Review

“Hello baby, you want to come play with me?” shouts a girl from a red window.

She’s wearing nothing except stockings, suspenders and a bra.

For three days and nights Industry Boy successfully managed to stay away from Amsterdam’s red light district, but somehow booze, bravado, curiosity and desperation had led me here at 4am.

San Fran Lovefest: Review

“Calling out around the world. Are you ready for a brand new beat? Summer’s here and the time is right, for dancing in the street.” Martha Reeves might have sung it, but on Saturday the citizens of San Francisco lived it. The annual San Fran Lovefest brought the city streets to a standstill as tens of thousands of clubbers, dance music fans, hippies and naked folk danced all day to the beats of DJs such as Gabriel & Dresden, Lee Burridge and DJ Dan.

Ibiza party time? Not for the Guardia Civil

The message is precise. Call 0034678198365 at 11pm sharp. An answer phone message bleeps. ‘Hello this is Mulletover. For our Ibiza closing party tonight head north to the town of San Juan. When you get to San Juan turn left towards Portinax. 5km down the road you’ll see a dirt track on the right.’

Meeting John Digweed…

John Digweedhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif is the unlikely superstar. Whilst his DJ partner and lifelong friend Sasha is the rock star who rolls with an entourage, Digweed is unassuming and comes by himself.

Sasha has that fame quality – built of equal parts infectious charisma and intimidating power.

John Digweed on the other hand, sitting with Industry Boy in this club, is simply a nice guy.

Meeting…Paul Oakenfold

Like the teenage girl that has a crush on the lead slimy douche bag of a boy band, Industry Boy too had an infatuation in my youth - Paul Oakenfoldhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif. I used to sit on the train on the way to school slowly caressing my penis through my trousers whilst listening to Oakey’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes and his Global Underground mix CDs.

Daft Punk @ Wireless Festival 2007

There are few acts in dance music bigger than Daft Punkhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif, so it’s no wonder they’re headlining Wireless Festival 2007 in London’s Hyde Park today, ahead of the Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem and Calvin Harris.
