DJ Tiësto to do it solo in Privilege Ibiza

Trance goliath DJ Tiësto has the biggest pull out of any DJ in the world, so it makes sense that he’ll be performing in the world’s biggest club, Privilege in Ibiza, every Monday throughout the 2008 summer.

After all, DJ Tiësto is probably the only DJ that could fill the cavernous Privilege - British promoters Manumission managed to do it back in the day, but they had to have sex shows with midgets and blokes sucking their own willys to pull in 10,000 clubbers every week.

DJ Tiësto won’t have any sex shows, but you can bet he’ll pull out all the stops to ensure the Ibiza punters get what they paid for.

Sander Kleinenberg replaces Pete Tong at Pacha Ibiza

When Pete Tong announced that he was going to be ditching Ibiza Town’s glamourous Pacha club for San Antonio’s Eden there was huge speculation as to who would be named resident DJ of Pure Pacha.

For a number of years Pete Tong entertained crowds at the opulent venue under the Pure Pacha brand, and with Tong jumping ship there was a huge void that needed to be filled.

Step forward Sander Kleinenberg and his DVJ spectacle.

Ibiza opening parties: DC10 line-up

Ibiza’s DC10 club is without a doubt one of the best clubs in the world, thanks to the loony Circoloco crew who run the club’s Monday daytime parties.

For many clubbers, the only reason they fly to Ibiza each summer is for DC10.

Beatportal has managed to get the lowdown on the line-up for the DC10 opening party on Monday June 2nd, and it looks sick.

Check it after the jump, and then book your flights.

New Ibiza music summit aims to take over from WMC

For years, people in the electronic music industry have been complaining about how Miami’s Winter Music Conference has lost much of its focus.

It certainly has become less about the ‘business’ and more about the parties: just check Beatportal’s guide to Miami to see just how many 100s of club nights, pool parties and raves are going on this year.

Networking and smoozing still goes on at the pool parties and in the back rooms of the clubs during Miami’s WMC, but it’s usually more of a social get together than a serious, business card-swapping gathering.

So it makes some sense that somebody would try to launch a rival music conference focusing just on the business.

Usually Beatportal would write-off such an attempt as futile because WMC is so established, but then we saw that Mr. Dance Music himself, Britain’s Pete Tong, is behind the new ‘International Music Summit’ and it’s being held in Ibiza, just before the opening weekend parties from 28th - 30th May 2008.

Ibiza Now mag concentrates on local issues

If you’re in Ibiza, be sure to check out Ibiza Now magazine, which is produced by the island’s locals for locals.

The magazine concentrates on issues that are important to Ibiza, not just electronic music and the clubs.

In February’s issue they have an account of how Ibiza’s residents recently clubbed together to stop the famous Salinas area [pictured] from being developed into blocks of apartments.

Is the party over for Ibiza? Just ask New York.

Ibiza is in the middle of a transition.

The new socialist government has introduced punitive new laws that will change Ibiza’s spirit as we know it - the hedonistic, life-affirming force that has attracted millions of young people to flock to the island ever since the Beatniks invaded the beaches in the 1950s.

The government, headed up by right-winger Xico Tarres, is intent on clamping down on certain elements of its kicking nightlife scene, mainly clubbers who come to party hard each summer.

Ibiza bids to attract new type of tourist

Whilst Ibiza’s new socialist government is waging war against clubbers who they recently branded as “low-quality tourists”, it is trying to attract a new breed of tourist to the island, one that is interested in cycling breaks, gastronomy and natural beauty.

Tourism minister Pepa Mari Ribas said they were keen to raise awareness of the destination’s lesser-known attractions to lure tour operators outside the summer months.

“For the first time we now have a website for Ibiza tourism, which highlights what there is to do here year-round, as well as simple things such as which hotels open in winter,” said Ribas.

“Our focus is the UK, Germany and northern Europe.

“We believe the season could be much longer, but operators say there is no demand.

“Low-cost services stop in winter too. If we can get people interested in Ibiza then the industry may have to take a fresh look at us.”

Presumably Ibiza’s government thinks that clubbers aren’t interested in outdoor activities, the island’s natural beauty or eating good food.

Ibiza council bans after-hours parties

Ibiza-Voice.com recently reported that Ibiza’s governing council are to ban after-hours clubs on the party island.

The draconian measures although “Ibiza-wide”, will in reality only affect three clubs - Space, DC10 and Bora Bora - as the area of San Josep is the only district in Ibiza that allows after-hours clubs.

In the island’s main newspaper Diario de Ibiza, a front-page lead story included aggressive quotes from the Consell president Xico Tarres, and Josep Mari Ribas, mayor of Sant Josep.

Tarres said after-hours clubs, “attract a lower quality of tourist and cause more problems than benefits.”

Whilst mayor Ribas said after-hours clubs are: “"totally undesirable… we don´t like them at all.”

Ibiza dubbed the ‘sleaziest island in the world’

National Geographic magazine has branded clubbing capital Ibiza one of the sleaziest islands in the world, and has said British clubbers have ruined the island.

In National Geographic’s annual top island guide published in its Traveller magazine 522 travel experts placed Ibiza second from bottom out of 111 selected islands.

One travel expert wrote: “Ibiza is not Spanish anymore. Or Balearic.

“It is a colony of Europe and, at times, seems more like a colony of British ravers.

“Half the island is still ‘natural.’ The other half has been lost completely to the party circuit.”
