Video: Adam Beyer and Joel Mull get freaky in L.A.

Here’s a video of Swedish techno DJ Adam Beyer and his partner in crime Joel Mull getting freaky behind the decks at Compression at Cinespace in Los Angeles.

On Friday the boys tore up Compression with a set of chunky techno grooves and acid tricks.

DJ Tip: How to warm up a dancefloor, by Joel Mull

Every DJ dreams of the glory of playing in front of thousands of screaming fans, but often the best opportunities for getting a foot in the door is through warm up sets before headliners.

There are very few DJs who understand the art of warming-up, and indeed, it is an art.

Understanding crowd psychology, human behavioral patterns and timing is just as important as track selection and mixing skills.

Swedish DJ and producer Joel Mull has been warming up the dancefloors for Adam Beyer during their North American Drumcode Tour and he’s impressed us at every set.

We asked Joel to share his knowledge and tips on the art of warming up just for Beatportal users, a skill set that he has learnt through almost 15 years of experience.

Here are his pointers, spoken in the same accent as Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid.

Drumcode Tour gets Compressed in Los Angeles

Adam Beyer and Joel Mull’s Drumcode Tour continued in fine style last night in Los Angeles, a city which has recently become a hot spot for electronic music in North America.

Thanks to the continued hard work of local DJs and promoters Droid, Compression and Droog, techno is thriving in the city and last night’s party was hosted by Compression at Cinespace in Hollywood.

Rob from Compression looks a little weary when we pull up to the front door of the club, with good reason.

“We’ve just done seven parties in five weeks which has been great, but a hell of a lot of work,” he says.

“Usually we only do two parties a month.”

The endless benefits of Beatport SYNC

During the Drumcode Tour, Joel Mull could frequently be seen pulling out his laptop to use Beatport SYNC, the free audio player with DJ functionality that is based on Native Instruments’ Traktor.

For anyone that hasn’t seen it yet, Beatport SYNC has two virtual decks and a simple mixer that you can use to play and mix tracks in your collection - MP3s, WAVs, AIFFs - it plays all audio formats.

Joel Mull was using the software as a way to test out mixes ahead of his sets when he was traveling on planes and hanging around in airports.

Drumcode Tour: Running on fumes in Miami

Adam Beyer’s leg is shaking at the speed of a wagging dog’s tail. “It’s time to go,” he says, standing up.

At 6’ 6”, this Swedish techno DJ’s desire to remain inconspicuous is futile; from the other side of this small nightclub in Miami, Florida, his trademark shaven head can easily be spotted.

An excited nerdy-looking 20-something comes bounding up with a huge smile on his face.

“Hey Adam! Can I have a photo?” shouts the kid. Adam obliges with a polite smile.

Secretly, I know that all Adam wants to do is sleep, because I feel the same way too.

Video: Adam Beyer’s top tracks

Beatportal forced Swedish techno DJ Adam Beyer to get his laptop out and pick his top tracks of the moment exclusively for you guys.

After going through his upfront inbox, Adam chose four records as his current big tracks, and then he played and dissected each one for us on camera.

Drumcode Tour pushes into the red in Toronto

“I used to play the drums when I was a kid and I’ve always been fascinated by drums,” said Adam Beyer before last night’s gig at Circa club in Toronto.

“I like loud things. When I was a kid I used to run around hitting things and everywhere I went I tried to make as much noise as possible.

“I was the loudest kid in the classroom; although I have calmed down a lot now.”

But has he? The music was so loud in the DJ booth when Adam started his set at 2am, that for shits and giggles, I downloaded an app from the iPhone’s app store called Decibel Meter.

Drumcode Tour: Chicken wings and gadgets in Toronto

“Are you a wings man?” asks Adam Beyer on the plane over from New York to Toronto. Today’s trip is only a 70 minute hop, which in the world of DJ travel, is a cool breeze.

“You know, chicken wings? Whenever I come to the States, I have to get chicken wings. Pizza too. Eating the specialties of a region is part of the fun of traveling,” he says, grinning.

No shout outs here, love

Adam Beyer and Joel Mull are universes away from the DJ that played at your school disco – they don’t wear flannel shirts or moustaches – but that didn’t stop a girl last night at Cielo from handing them a napkin in their middle of their set with a scribbled message asking for a shout out for her mate.

Er…sorry love, they don’t do ‘shout outs’.

Drumcode Tour kicks off with a bang

The Drumcode Tour hit the ground running tonight in New York City, the first chapter of a North American techno story that’ll run for the next two weeks.

The odds were against Adam Beyer and Joel Mull today, what with the Dow Jones having dropped to its lowest level in three years and it being the biggest Jewish holiday of the year, Yom Kippur. Those two factors could have affected the number of attendees.

Tonight’s venue Cielo, too, ain’t known for hosting banging techno as it’s more of a house music club, but by 1am the driving percussive techno of the Swedish duo, clocked in at around 130 bpms, didn’t scare off Cielo’s well-dressed crowd who are used to things being less frenetic.
