Dance-floor ammo: Dapayk ‘Deva’ Remix
22 September, 2008 | 1.27PMWith lines like, “I love my cocaine”, “I need drugs” and “I f*ck my way to the top”, this track is pretty representative of a big part of the club scene, as far as DJ groupies go.
Boasting solidly satisfying beats and late-’80s Detroit stabs ‘n’ pads, ‘Deva’ remix is a beautiful and addictive rush.

Dance-floor ammo: ‘Sandwiches’
19 September, 2008 | 12.58PMThis is weirdest tech-house lick you’ve ever heard.
Actually, I take that back, the one I heard last night featuring samples of E.T. flirting with Elliott takes the trophy, but this is still weird as sh*t…

A Guy Called Gerald re-released ’Black Secret Technology’
26 August, 2008 | 3.05AM1995 was a good year for drum and bass (or jungle, as many people still called it back then).
Even though most people probably think of Goldie’s groundbreaking and commercially successful debut album ’Timeless’, there was another album, that shook (not just) the drum and bass world that year:
A Guy Called Geraldhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gifhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_l.gif‘s ’Black Secret Technology’, which came out six months prior to ’Timeless’.
Thirteen years after its inital release, the album got re-released and is also available digitally for the first time [check it out in the player after the jump].
Video: Pete Tong plays Groove Armada anthem
8 August, 2008 | 5.53PMHere’s a very dimly lit video of Pete Tonghttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif playing Groove Armadahttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif ‘Superstylin’’ at a secret beach party in Ibiza.
The dance track has to be one of the best ever house anthems and no matter how many times I hear it, I’ll never get bored of it.
Dance Anthem: Rank 1 ‘Airwave’
13 July, 2008 | 8.56AMIn 1999 trance was at its peak in the UK and much of Europe, and Dutch trance duo Rank 1http://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif became huge sensations overnight thanks to their club smash ‘Airwave’ which was caned by all the big trance DJs.
I remember seeing Judge Jules drop this in the main room at Turnmills’ long-running Friday night ‘The Gallery’, and the entire club went insane.
Sadly, Turnmills is no more.
In the breakdown he started playing two copies of ‘Airwave’ and whilst one of them played out, he started drumming his fingers on the other copy like a live drummer, adding an extra breakbeat in the breakdown.
The clubbers thought they had died and gone to heaven.

Dance Anthem: Evolution ‘Walking On Fire feat. Jayn Hanna’
3 June, 2008 | 8.35AMIn 2001 John Digweedhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif was crowned No.1 DJ in the world in DJ Magazine’s annual Top 100 DJs poll, which was around the same time that progressive house blew up.
One of Digweed’s biggest tracks from that period was Evolutionhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif ‘Walking On Fire’ which featured the vocals of Jayn Hanna.
Released on John Digweed’s own Bedrock Recordshttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_l.gif, the track was an anthem at his monthly Thursday night Bedrock events at Heaven in London for months before it was eventually released in June 2002.
With its haunting female vocals and dark bass warbled beats, it’s one of the greatest progressive house tracks of all time.

Dance Anthem: Robert Miles ‘Children’
31 May, 2008 | 4.19PMTrance hit the mainstream in one knockout punch with Robert Mileshttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif ‘Children’, taking the then unknown producer straight to the top of the pop charts in 12 countries upon its release in 1995.
The story behind why Robert Miles created ‘Children’ is an endearing one - after seeing his father’s photographs of child war victims that he had brought home from a humanitarian mission in the former Yugoslavia, Miles was moved to create the emotional record, with its famous piano lead.
There are rumours that Miles also created the track to end DJ sets, intended to calm rave attendants before they drove home as a means to reduce car accidents.
Whatever his reasons are for creating it, ‘Children’ remains one of the greatest trance records ever made.
We dug up the original black and white video on YouTube, check it out.

Dance Anthem: Tomas Andersson ‘Washing Up’ (Tiga Mix)
27 May, 2008 | 6.32AMSwedish producer Tomas Anderssonhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif shot to international stardom with his stupidly fun electro house record ‘Washing Up’ which, thanks to a mix from Tigahttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif, became one of the biggest tracks of 2005.
The first time I heard ‘Washing Up’ was at Glade Festival in England, and when the beat dropped after the huge breakdown, the tent went insane.

Dance Anthem: Natural Born Chiller ‘Rock The Funky Beats’
23 March, 2008 | 11.23AMDrum & bass anthems don’t get much better than Natural Born Chillerhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif ‘Rock The Funky Beats’ which was originally released in 1997 on Urban Takeover.
The unmistakable vocal, eerie synths and floor shaking break are enough to make even the most homophobic of hard men break it down.

Dance Anthem: Nalin and Kane ‘Beachball’
20 March, 2008 | 10.37PMTrance and house don’t normally sound good when melded together, but Nalinhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif and Kanehttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif ‘Beachball’ managed to bridge the gap between glowsticks and heels in 1997 and was featured on loads of compilations from both genres.
Many will consider ‘Beachball’ as a trance classic, but it is so far removed from the standard trance being released today that it’s difficult to tarnish it with the same brush.
The Extended Vocal Mix [track No.2 in the player after the jump] is the one that does it for me.
With its inviting female vocals, bongo rolls and the all important waves sample ‘Beachball’ is the perfect track to chill dance too.
What’s chill dance you say? It’s a dance move I just made up - it’s when you dance like you normally do, but you’re chilling too, letting the music flow through you and become a part of you, just like how you might let the waves on a beach splash over your hot body and take control of your movement.

Dance Anthem: Liquid ‘Sweet Harmony’
19 March, 2008 | 4.45AMLiquidhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif ‘Sweet Harmony’ makes me nearly cry every time I hear it (and no it’s not because I’m a girl).
It’s because every time I hear it, I’m taken back to an old London rave club called Bagleys, which is now, sadly a pile of broken bricks as it was knocked down recently to make way for the Kings Cross rail link.
Whilst most dance anthems are about big rooms and big crowds, ‘Sweet Harmony’ reminds me of being alone in the dark cold basement of Bagleys, wondering where the hell my friends are.

Dance Anthem: Cortina ‘Music Is Moving’ (BK & dBm Amber Remix)
15 March, 2008 | 1.37PMOk don’t shoot me, but I’ve chosen a hard house record as a dance anthem. Now before you go and write me off as some day glo wearing freak with fluffy leg warmers you should hear me out.
Hard house, as much as it is difficult on the ears, has had a few good records, especially in the 2003 / 2004 era when it experienced a boom in the UK.
One of the records that defined that era was Cortinahttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif ‘Music Is Moving’.
Dance Anthem: George Morel ‘Let’s Groove’
29 February, 2008 | 3.04AMClassic house music doesn’t get more funky than George Morel’s ‘Let’s Groove’ which still sounds cool today.
The melody is so perfect and the house beats make the song bounce along at a fun pace.
The track was originally released in 1992, but it doesn’t sound like it.
I would love to hear the track in a club today.
Is there a DJ out there with the balls?

Dance Anthem: Shakedown ‘At Night’
26 February, 2008 | 8.16AMEvery year there’s a house anthem that defines the Ibiza clubbing season and Shakedown’s ‘At Night’ was 2001’s club wonder, a perfect vocal house record that sounded good both on the scorching hot beaches and on the terrace of Space.
I remember dancing my skirt off to this on a table in the Bora Bora beach bar, and not really caring that my (slightly) cellulite-laden legs were exposed to all those hot party boys.
It quickly got played to death that July, but having rediscovered it again, I felt compelled to add it to my Dance Anthems list.
Here’s the video from YouTube.
