You & I / Router
Pangea [Hessle Audio]
#06 in this month's The 20As the boundaries between techno and dubstep become ever more blurred, a steady stream of producers have become willing to follow in the footsteps of Shackleton
and Martyn
and meld together these musical kissing cousins.
Hessle Audio
- the label that earlier this year released Martyn’s seminal remix of TRG’s ‘Broken Heart’ - are behind this release from Pangea
, and seem to be developing a penchant for outputting EPs that prick up the ears of the techno and dusbstep communities alike.
‘You & I’ opens amid hazy chords and tension-laden hats before breaking into a bass-heavy, 2-step stomp. A distant vocal passes liquid-like among the sprawling pads and lo-fi crackle amounting to a cut that is both emotionally engaging and danceable.
‘Router’ is based upon a more clipped rhythmic template but still employs similar bass heavy and emotive principles to its predecessor. Additional percussion atmospherics only sweeten the deal further.
