Whispers

Aeroplane [Eskimo]

#17 in this month's The 20

All the screams of “Disco Sucks!” and record burning parties in the world couldn’t crush the disco strength of ‘Whispers’ by Belgium duo Aeroplane.

Nearly as a revival of the sound, UK songstress Kathy Diamond adds her vocal touch to remove the cut further back from house to touch on its roots.

Hercules & Love Affair give a take that updates the cut to a sound closer to house of the 1980s, but primarily strays away from modern production.

That’s not to say it’s not well done.

‘Whispers’, while something of an homage to a prior era, somehow fits well into today’s European leanings pointing backwards towards house — it just does one better and goes all the way back to the crisp, clean sound of disco.

Retro never seems objectionable by most club-goers anyway, especially when this kind of retro maintains a strong groove element at its core.
