When The Sun Goes Down (Underground Resistance Remixes)

Anthony Rother [Datapunk]

#18 in this month's The 20

Revisiting an Anthony Rother [a] classic is not a job for your average run-of-the-mill, white bread producer, oh no.

And taking on the mighty ‘When the Sun Goes Down’ requires the sort of time-honoured commitment to your trade that few in the world of techno could lay claim to. Step forward Underground Resistance [a].

Headed up by Mike Banks, the collective’s output in recent times has been slim to none, so it’s with great anticipation we gobble up this relative crumb that has fallen from the golden breadbasket.

The ‘Ain’t No Sunshine Remix’ bears all the hallmarks of the finest UR releases from yesteryear; eloquently spaced synthesis, dream-like atmospherics, razor sharp percussion and above all else, that inimitable ‘feeling’.

Truth be told this ‘remix’ sounds far closer to an original production with some additional vocal snatches tossed in for good measure, but in this case, who cares, quite frankly.

Equally as impressive is the ‘Flash Light Remix’. Falling further towards Bank’s Galaxy 2 Galaxy output, the version is based upon the sort of all-encompassing analog synth lines that saw the label through much of the 1990’s.
