Watamu Beach (Moritz Von Oswald Rework) - Sebbo

Featured Review #01

Watamu Beach (Moritz Von Oswald Rework)

Sebbo [Desolat]

#01 in this month's The 20

History has proven that you must be doing something extraordinary in order to get the attention of Basic Channel’s Moritz Von Oswald [a].

Only for a limited number of occasions — of which Carl Craig’s ‘The Climax’ Reshape stands out — has even Basic Channel given any remix treatment to fellow artists’ selections.

Yet somehow, fellow German Sebbo [a] has made it happen.

The cut in its original form already seems to have a penchant for both tribal chanting and dub sounds, placing itself easily within a category that may just end up appearing in the personal record collection of Von Oswald.

To hear Von Oswald’s more tempered approach to ‘Watamu Beach’, then, comes as no surprise, although it’s an understatement that as with any Basic Channel-related release, the Rework is best heard in the higher quality WAV format.

Atmospheric Detroit-style pads flow throughout, giving the grounded original a bit of a lift while keeping complexities of the track in tact.

Although Sebbo has been in the game for just a few years, his work has yet to be fully recognized.

It’s this kind of nod that will cement him permanently into ears with refined taste.
