Milky Disco
Various Artists [Lo Recordings]
#19 in this month's The 20If you’re looking to get the inside track on the cosmic disco/nu disco sound that is currently gaining popularity, look no further that Lo Recordings
new ‘Milky Disco’ compilation. The 11-track compilation contains some of the tunes that have helped define the sound, and is the best representation of the genre Beatportal has come across.
From dubbed out instrumental house, to arpeggiated italo disco electronics, ‘Milky Disco’ is filled with enough nu disco to educate even the most clueless – nu disco is still very much an underground scene, but looks likely to blow up big next year.
Morgan Geist’s funky electronic disco tribute to Black Devil as Jersey Devil Social Club (‘Child 13’) is already something of a classic, and Black Devil themselves feature twice on the compilation, providing two excellent remixes for Prins Thomas’ ‘On Just Foot’ and In Flagranti’s ‘Nonplusultra’.
Georges Vert
explores live elements over a space disco groove on his ‘Electric Bird’ which features inspiring excited violins and electronic bird noises.
Daniel Wong ‘Flowers Must Fade’ is perfect deep house for those Sunday afternoon after parties when things are thoroughly spaced out already.
Sally Shapiro
‘Spacer Woman From Mars’ contains the necessary vocoded female vocals and FX over a Giorgio Moroder-esque bassline jig.
Black Mustang
and Kerrier District
provide one of the grooviest tracks on the compilation with ‘Mad As Hell’ that pushes the space disco sound beyond just a rehash of 1970s-inspired disco.
Their funk and soul beat takes centre stage whilst less involved space synths loiter in the background.
Sorcerer too pushes the envelope forwards with the enjoyable guitar-led ‘Surfing At Midnight’ that contains organ hits and discofied drums – it’s the perfect track for an Ibiza chill out session.
All in all, this is an excellent compilation that will further help the genre find its feet.
Dance music probably already has too many genres already, but ‘Milky Disco’ has proven that there’s enough decent cosmic disco out there to warrant a new tag.
