The Standoffish Cat

Mrs. Jynx [Planet Mu]

#12 in this month's The 20

Manchester’s Mrs. Jynx is influenced by Uziq, Frog Pocket and Aphex Twin and on Hannah Davidson’s debut album ‘The Standoffish Cat’ her love for ambient techno shines through.

With 13 tracks of delicate melodic electronica built around harmonic layers and downtempo rhythms, the music is a blissful, inspiring listen.

‘Ice Pops’, ‘Pillow’ and ‘Chocolate Oranges’ perhaps best represents what ‘The Standoffish Cat’ is about – all three tracks drift along slowly with waves of melody.

There are moments of darkness though.

‘Wooshgone’ meanders along through valleys of acid basslines and ‘Minor Down’ is a painfully slow journey.

Ultimately, this album is a simple yet elegant approach to ambient electronica.
