#12 in this month's The 20

If you are just now becoming familiar with the name Sebastien San [a], you’ll wonder why you hadn’t heard it before.

It certainly becomes evident from first listen to any one of his cuts that this Frenchman has had a long fascination with Detroit techno.

Indeed, he’s worked in the past with Kevin Saunderson and Mike Banks (of Underground Resistance), picking up some key techniques for the creation of his soulful sounds.

Of course, he’s also worked with musician Kirk DiGiorgio (As One) — a London-based musician who’s also held a place in his heart for Detroit — which has helped to spread San’s reach further yet.

And now, several years on, San has landed with current ambassador for Detroit, Carl Craig, with a new single called ‘Rising Sun’.
The bassline of the single itself echoes strongly of his influence.

But it’s when Carl Craig [a] (referred to here as C2) takes over that the simplicity of his edit speaks most loudly.

Craig removes some of the excess activity of the Original ‘Rising Sun’, leaving a surprisingly none-too-sparse soulful essence; it’s something that puts the current idea of minimalism to shame in its ultimate groove of an impact.

This teaming of San with Carl Craig was perhaps inevitable, and perhaps we’re a bit accustomed to Craig’s superb handling of remixes, but it makes for still one heck of must-hear treatment.
