Red Shift EP
Speedy J [Electric Deluxe]
#07 in this month's The 20Delivering his first single for over two years, Dutch techno pioneer Speedy J continues to break new ground with the ‘Red Shift EP’ for his own Electric Deluxe imprint.
Created using parts from his ‘Kreate’ sound library, this two-track release sees something of a change of pace from the veteran producer with the busy, industrial leanings of his hitherto work replaced with stripped-back, but no less menacing arrangements.
Title track ‘Red Shift’ sounds like a machine exhaling, spitting sharp, metallic groans as it works.
The sense of foreboding is retained on B-side ‘Bootes’ with all its melody eschewed in favour of pitched, whirring percussion and grey-tinted ambience.
As Beatportal’s Lee Smith recently put it, “the murky limbo between grey-scale electronics and bleak ultra-minimalism, it’s a startling return to the fray from a true techno master.”
