Prototype - Swat Squad

Prototype

Swat Squad [Tic Tac Toe Records]

#19 in this month's The 20

Swat Squad is quirky minimal techno act based out of the unlikely location of sunny Barcelona, Spain.

It may be its location that keeps the sound from getting too deep while maintaining a feel that’s slightly on the lighter side.

The duo of Oliver Henares and his brother Rubén, who began releasing tracks for the likes of Trapez and Treibstoff since 2004, was initiated based out of events to celebrate graphic design, and as such, each of the three cuts on ‘Prototype’ contain a graphic approach.

The playfulness of ‘Atomic Lighter’ is so bouncy, in fact, that it could work on a forward-thinking children’s compilation.

‘Red Cat’ has a trippy feel perhaps best suited for an adult state of mind (in more ways than one).

It’s ‘Prototype’ that’s a labyrinth that finally breaks into another dimension upon its final transition.

Keeping in line with the title of the release, ‘Prototype’ could truly be the best description for this latest Swat Squad release, experimenting their way through to new sounds and models that extend beyond minimal.

Because it’s clear that minimal has already expanded beyond its typical home bases and has moved into Spain.
