Pox Box (Johnny D Remix)

Ralph Sliwinski [Sushitech]

#14 in this month's The 20

Beatportal has been a huge supporter of Johnny D since his seismic debut ‘Manipulation EP’ in November 2007, and now comes a hot new remix of Ralph Sliwinski’s ‘Pox Box’.

Johnny D has a talent for creating rolling house that ebbs and flows organically like a river of groove, and here on ‘Pox Box’ he demonstrates his ability to create funk-infected techno.

Bridging the gap between techno, minimal and house is no mean feat, but Johnny D does so effortlessly on ‘Pox Box’ – which is why top producers like Guy Gerber are big fans of Johnny D.

Interestingly, the seductive, hypnotic rhythms of Johnny D’s music comes from his childhood, when he was growing up in Eritrea, Africa.

Back in February he told Beatportal that benefit parties organized by Eritrean refugees had a profound effect on his understanding of music.

“The lyrics of the songs were filled with stories about the war and were very passionate,” he said at the time.

“The songs could sometimes last for 20 to 30 minutes and people danced all night long.”

Ralph Sliwinski’s original of ‘Pox Box’ is very good too, and features deep house chords and a cool percussive noises.
