Like Sascha Funke, Paul Kalkbrenner spends much of his time in the South of France in Aix en Provence, a small city located 30km north of Marseilles.

Considering the relaxing environment, one would expect Kalkbrenner’s music to be soft and delicate, idyllic and fun – like a virgin running through a field of daffodils.

But PK’s ‘Altes Kamuffel’ is in fact a full on techno stormer, which begins soft and trancey and ends with a flat-lining bass-driven techno groove.

‘Ick Muss Aus Dit Milieu Heraus’ (which means ‘I’ve gotta get out of this milieu’ ) doesn’t rest for more than a few seconds – a relentless techno builder that drives and chugs along at a frenetic pace.

This is no light and fluffy croissant – it’s a shot of double espresso.
