Plastikman [Minus]

#01 in this month's The 20

As Madonna knows, the secret to a long and successful musical career is reinvention.

In electronic music however, in a scene that’s always been suspicious of commercial sell outs, it’s a hell of a lot harder to get away with it.

DJs and producers who suddenly move from one genre of music to another run the risk of being exiled by their old fans, and being shunned by the new genre’s purists.

Dubfire [a] from Deep Dish however, has slowly but surely managed to win over the techno crowd, whilst still remaining popular in progressive house circles.

The transformation began at the tail end of 2006, when Dubfire produced a surprisingly techy remix of Nic Fanciulli’s ‘Lucky Heather’ .

Then Dubfire’s Global Underground mix CD ‘Taipei’ showcased his love for progressive house, whilst at the same time showed a more techno-orientated approach with tracks by Samuel L Session, Extrawelt and Ellen Allien included in the mix.

Next came the hugely popular ‘Roadkill’ an electro house stormer which was quite stripped back compared to the rich and complicated music of Deep Dish.

Dubfire however only dropped proper techno when his remix of DJ Yellow’s ‘No More Enemie’ came out at the end of July.

In September, ‘Ribcage’ on Desolat reiterated his techno skills.

Richie Hawtin then featured Dubfire’s ‘Emissions’ on his label Minus and the evolution of Dubfire was complete.

Now comes some remixes of Richie Hawtin [a] aka Plastikman’s classic tracks, and Dubfire’s version of ‘Spastik’ is one of the best techno tracks of the year.

Featuring driving hi hats, rolling military snares and shed loads of FX, Dubfire’s Rework will destroy any techno club. Guaranteed.

It just goes to prove that at the end of the day, music speaks for itself.

Also look on the release for a percussive-led Guido Schneider remix of ‘Panikattack’.
