Mushrooms (Justin Martin Mix)

Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa Heads [...

#10 in this month's The 20

There must be something in the Chicago air that inspires the artists that end up inspiring the rest of the lot.

In this case, Marshall Jefferson [a], known primarily for the early house anthem ‘Move Your Body’, has his 1990s single ‘Mushrooms’ retreated, as he was in the midst of a comeback with the aid of Noosa Heads [a].

The man at the helm of reconfiguring the track is San Franciscan Justin Martin [a], known initially for ‘The Sad Piano’ on Buzzin Fly label, seemed to see yet more depth to the cut.

Now a prominent name for Dirty Bird, Martin’s deep tap into house and melody make a renewed appeal in tech house (still heavy on the house side), making the song sound fresh all over again.

Updated with just the right amount of modernization yet respect for the past, it’s Martin’s version of ‘Mushrooms’ that keep the legend of Marshall Jefferson firmly in check.
