#01 in this month's The 20

When Loco Dice or Timo Maas need a hit record they call on Martin Buttrich [a] to help them out in the studio.

Buttrich has collaborated with Timo Maas on over 100 tracks, and much of Loco Dice’s best output has come from Buttrich’s studio, but it’s his own releases like ‘Full Clip’, ‘Well Done’ and ‘Programmer’ that have caught the attention of the underground techno community.

Rich dark soundscapes, warm organic melodies and hypnotic melancholic moments are to be found on all his releases that have appeared on the scene’s top labels including Poker Flat and Carl Craig’s Planet E.

Here on his new EP ‘Hunter’ on Sven Vath’s Cocoon Recordings [l], Buttrich displays a sexier, more housier edge with the B side ‘Hunted’ which has shot straight to No.1 on Beatport’s Top 100 Downloads Chart.

The tightly-knitted groove and monotonous bassline is exactly the type of house music that is taking over the minimal scene currently.

As minimal continues to absorb more and more house elements, it’ll be tracks like ‘Hunted’ that define this exciting new era where techno collides with house.

A side ‘Hunter’ is equally as thought-provoking, in a more typical Martin Buttrich style.

A trippy lead synth floats in a trance-like way over dirty rumbling basslines that’ll move any darkened dancefloor.

This is a progressive and innovative release.
