Two Left Feet
Marc Ashken [Leftroom]
#05 in this month's The 20The last time Beatportal spoke to Marc Ashken, he was working as a shop assistant in a trendy clothes shop on the Kings Road, London.
DJing and producing music was just a hobby, and he dreamed of chucking in the day job and doing electronic music full time.
Since then, the British producer has risen up the techno ranks to become one of the hottest and most talked-about artists on the block.
By combining dub with minimal techno and house, Ashken has carved out a niche that is currently being exploited with great success by Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom Recordings.
And here on this four-track EP Ashken demonstrates his prowess at fusing different genres to create something totally unique.
On ‘Nimrod’ Marc delivers a fractured glitch fest over a groovy sub bassline, that evolves and changes constantly so your mind never quite knows what sound to focus on.
One minute it’s slow daggy dub house, the next it is banging techno. Absolute quality.
Marc Houle’s remix of ‘Nimrod’ then goes one better and uses pitched-down snares to great effect.
Ashken goes a bit wonky with ‘Roots Dyed Dark’ and cleverly drops the BPM range down to almost zero for a bizarre groundbreaking breakdown.
It then rises back up again for a fantastic drop.
There’s also a Beat Edit of ‘Roots’ which gallops and pulses towards a satisfying conclusion.
Ashken is pushing the envelope of minimal, techno and house all at once with this EP and if he’s still working in that clothes shop, we urge him to give up the day job.
