Just from the title ‘REM’ you know that the track will be deep, mystical and magical – after all a banging hard house caner just wouldn’t fit the subject matter of sleep.
Sure enough, DJ Ino’s remix of ‘REM’ is a wonderfully soulful deep house track that might actually induce a trance-like state should you happen to take a big hit of cannabis just before the female vocal kicks in with its lyrics about dreams and all.
In the old days, quite a lot of house and trance revolved around hippy concepts like dreams, ecstasy (the feeling, not the drug), the sun, the moon and Mother Nature, but here the cliché is not cringing or overcooked.
Indeed DJ Ino’s remix reminds of a peaceful yesteryear and sounds totally old skool, but at the same time it has a cute clever warmth to it that gives it real crossover potential.
Garcynoise & Pablo Bolivar’s Retouch manages to combine both the feeling of the original with tech house beats and a rolling bassline, but it doesn’t quite convey the idea.
Still, this is a worthy release.
