Lie Down/Which Way Now
Long Range [Long Range Records]
#06 in this month's The 20For almost two decades Orbital inspired and led Britain’s electronic music scene. In 2004, after seven albums and a long and illustrious career brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll disbanded.
But Phil Hartnoll loved making electronic music too much and started a new creative project called Long Range
with a new sidekick.
Nick Smith is a dance producer whose past achievements include creating music for film director Ridley Scott.
Here the duo embark on an ambient journey through downtempo and breakbeat, providing two tracks of cinematic atmospheric brilliance.
Like Orbital, the two jam with broken beats and jarred acoustic sounds, fusing both live instruments with electronic rhythms.
Both tracks are impossible to pigeonhole and perfectly produced.
‘Lie Down’ is captivating chill out and electronica, whereas ‘Which Way Now’ is progressive breakbeat with a huge trancey breakdown.
Not quite as good as Orbital, but quality nonetheless.
