#08 in this month's The 20The title of Kenny Larkin’s new LP would almost serve to suggest it’s an album that comprises of a great deal more than your average techno record.
This would indeed be true but would not extend nearly far enough to convey the length and breadth of the sonic arsenal on offer here.
At its very core ‘Keys, Strings and Tambourines’ is a dense expression of classic Detroit tech, built upon a concrete bass of heavy, analog tones and angular rhythms.
A kitchen sink’s worth of instrumentation is thrown into the blend then allowed to roam freely across the arrangements, resulting in a jazz-like glow throughout.
Particular highlights include ‘Glob’, which slides in like a mellower cousin of ‘At Les’, ‘Drone’ transmits Berlin minimal Kenny Larkin
style and ‘Cirque De Soul’ impresses with its free-flowing piano and bubbling bottom end.
