Dos

Michael Fakesch [K7! Records]

#19 in this month's The 20

Michael Fakesch, one half of German duo Funkstörung, releases his solo album ‘Dos’ on K7! and the LP is a total surprise. Funkstörung’s acid house beats and electronic oddness have been replaced by Justin Timberlake-style funky pop.

The track ‘Soda’ sums up Fakesch’s intent for ‘Dos’ to be a crossover LP.

Funky trumpets and live guitars combine with sexy male vocals and broken beat, but between the musical parts is an exceptional electronic glue that holds everything in place.

Glitchy feedback, curious FX and weird noises punctuate the album throughout.

Fakesch uses his past experiences with Funkstörung to great effect, turning quirky girl-friendly pop into slightly wonky electronic fun.

‘Complicated’, ‘Escalate’ and ‘Travel’ are the standout vocal tracks on the album, but there’s also some wacky hip hop beats (‘Don’t Stop’), and the downtempo electronic soundscapes of ‘Wire’ and ‘Blackbird’ offer a relaxing alternative.

This is eccentric pop, unpredictable, dangerous and fun.
