Goodbye
Ulrich Schnauss [Independiente]
#09 in this month's The 20Shoegazing might be long gone, but Ulrich Schnauss
is still standing motionless staring down at his laptop.
The German producer’s new LP ‘Goodbye’ borrows heavily from the sound that Slowdrive and other shoegaze bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s offered.
The genre’s distinctive cogs are all there – reverb laden atmospherics, ambient stretches of drone noise, distorted walls of sound and indistinguishable vocal melodies – and together they turn to form a unique and mesmerising waterfall of sound.
This is definitely chill out, but whilst the mood will help you to put your feet up, the texture and quality of sound will keep your mind active.
Great waves of sound wash over you on ‘A Song About Hope’, whilst on ‘Never Be The Same’ there’s a calm, serene lace that threads its way to heaven.
‘Stars’ features electric guitars displaced by snippets of broken beat, and Ulrich Schnauss explores a darker more evil head on ‘Medusa’, its snaking sounds and atmospheric electronics will turn your mind to stone.
There are elements of techno, progressive rock (some tracks remind of prog rock band Rush) and shoegaze on ‘Goodbye’, and although the album mimics the alternative rock sound, it has been reinvented for the electronic audience.
This is unique and captivating.
