Falko Brocksieper’s ‘Heavy Day’ represents the fun, electroclash sensibilities of the Cologne techno scene and here on his second studio LP he combines moody, dark soundscapes with funky electro-tech house.
In the five years since his debut artist album ‘Hoax Deluxe’, Falko Brocksieper has matured his sound through a frenetic number of remixes and releases, and when comparing his two LPs, it seems he’s retreated into his soul a little.
‘Heavy Day’ is a deeper affair than ‘Hoax Deluxe’, with tracks like ‘Private’ and ‘Emotional Support’ (which features Richard Davis on vocals) displaying a darker and more troubled being behind the studio glass.
‘Suspect’ and ‘Face It’ (which features his fellow Sub Static label partner Mia on vocals) drift into the dubby territory of breaks, whilst ‘Homecoming’ slides through the darkest recesses of techno with moaning melancholic synths.
There are still etchings of electro-clash fun to be found on ‘Heavy Day’, including the brilliant ‘Lament’ and ‘That Night’, but the album predominantly stands in the shadows.
The darker frequencies certainly rule Falko Brocksieper this year, and ‘Heavy Day’ is a fitting title for his second album.
