Ellipsis/Eulogy
Chymera [Figure]
#13 in this month's The 20- Section: Music Recommendations Topics: The 20
I met Chymera recently at Barcelona’s Sonar, and he cut a dramatically different figure to the man I expected him to be from listening to his music.
All of Chymera’s tracks are profound, awe-inspiring melodic techno cuts that soar high above the Earth like eagles sent from heaven, and yet there he was, this young skinny and very polite chap from Ireland grinning from ear to ear.
From listening to ‘Ellipsis’ and ‘Eulogy’ one imagines Chymera to be some sort of prophet with a white beard and the wisdom of a thousand men, but he wasn’t.
That probably makes his music all the more fascinating, the fact that a nerd with a few computers can create such beautiful, melodic compositions.
‘Ellipsis’ is one of the best techno tracks of the year and yet it’s very hard to describe exactly what makes it so powerful.
The sound quality, production and arrangement are all top notch as one would expect from a producer at the top of his game, but there is something more than the parts and production.
There is a vision that very few producers dare to experiment with.
There is something so earth shattering about the 7th minute and 34th second of ‘Ellipsis’ that stays with you long after the song ends.
Similarly, ‘Eulogy’ has “Staircase to Heaven” moments, as Chymera throws down layer after layer of beautiful harmonic synths and pads that transcend well beyond the instantaneous satisfaction of listening to the music itself.
It’s almost as if the brain doesn’t have enough imagination to go where the music wants to take you, and you’re left feeling the humility of man.
