Miss Fitz [Contexterrior]
#08 in this month's The 20Nina Simone has been cut up, slapped about and abused by techno and house producers recently; at least, her famous vocals have.
Whilst Luciano has been playing his own Nina Simone secret bootleg (which features Felix Da Houscat’s piano line from his remix of ‘Sinnerman’ merged with an unknown vocal), here Miss Fitz
dabbles with a bit of Simone by sampling ‘Feeling Good’ on ‘Drifting’.
With minimal producers and DJs moving closer towards house music, Nina Simone’s soulful jazz-infused vocals are being used by producers who wish to partner her with the more anodyne musical elements of techno.
Contrast is often one of the electronic music producers most powerful tools, and Miss Fitz demonstrates how to do it right by layering Nina Simone’s sensual vocals over dark bleeps and bass.
The beats and arrangement on ‘Drifting’ are simple and bass heavy, whilst Nina Simone’s vocals give the track a sexy recognizable hook.
As technology continues to improve and new sampling tools emerge like the Celemony Melodyne (which allows incredible manipulation of recorded audio) we should expect to hear more old vocals appear layered over electronic music.
