Dear Painter, Paint Me

Heartthrob [Minus]

#06 in this month's The 20

Heartthrob’s jovial take on minimal techno is unique because it’s much more than just bleeps and bass: it’s inherently groovy.

His long awaited debut LP ‘Dear Painter, Paint Me’ is a great example of how at the heart of Heartthrob’s music is a cheeky, ass-shaking monkey waiting to come out.

There’s always something tangible in his tracks and something memorable to hold on to.

‘Blind Item’ for instance, plods along with a quirky lead synth that hooks you right from the start, before kicking off into a running loop of acidic tech house without warning.

The popular ‘Signs’ and the less obvious ‘Interference’ have a certain circus music quality to them, being fun, fast-paced dancefloor twisters with huge melodic lead lines.

The detuned, fly-like lead synth in ‘Heading For A Heartbreak’ sounds uniquely strange and free as it dances amongst dark pad echoes, as do the main synths in ‘Confession’ which hypnotize with impressive clarity.

The good news is that beyond the quirkiness of ‘Dear Painter, Paint Me’ and at the center of all Heartthrob’s tracks is an uptempo techno beat that gives his album real club potential – the LP is more a collection of dancefloor tracks than a conceptual look at techno expressionism.

Which is just fine, in Beatportal’s eyes.
