Fumiya Tanaka and Radiq [op.disc]

#17 in this month's The 20

Though all the current rage is about techno in Berlin and Detroit, Japan is often, regretfully, left out of the equation.

But for those that have been keeping tabs, Fumiya Tanaka [a] is one of Japan’s heavyweights and has been mastering the craft for well over a decade in Tokyo, in both production and DJing.

When he teams up with musician and composer Radiq [a] (AKA Yoshihiro Hanno), the two become known as Dartriix, taking the balance of Tanaka’s minimal instincts with Radiq’s dramatic flair for a middle ground that reaches a sparse density.

For the ‘Dartriix’ release, the duo is known by their individual artist names, releasing the album on Tanaka’s own op.disc [l] label.

Radiq, now based in Paris, seems to add an otherworldly element to the music.

In ‘Who Is Me’, purely abstract vocals meet yet further abstract instrumentation grounded only by a subtle backbeat.

But make your way to ‘Barthazar’ and much more straight-forward techno elements take precedence, yet leave room to travel easily into the bizarre.

With ‘Dartriix’, Tanaka and Radiq are not committed to any one particular sound, which is what makes the album impressive.

It’s their ability to jointly cover uncharted territory — commonly known as a sense of adventure — that makes ‘Dartriix’ an artistic milestone for both musicians.
