Usually when people go traveling, they return home refreshed and with a positive outlook on life, but Jay Bulletproof has seemingly trudged back Down Under with a dark cloud above his head.
The Auckland-based drum & bass producer has been touring the world for the last year and his 2nd album ‘Dark Times / Desperate Measures’ is the result of that globetrotting.
Having collaborated with some of the scene’s most prolific producers including Mindscape, Tiki, Psidream and Gridlock Bulletproof has turned out a dark and wickedly infectious drum & bass album that ambitiously offers a message too: the world sucks, basically.
Which is just fine for drum & bass dancefloors where darkness is sought after as much as vampires have thirst for blood.
With 12 tracks of warbling, bass-driven beats, sample-heavy distortion and atmospheric pads, ‘Dark Times / Desperate Measures’ will collide into clubs.
Beyond dancing, the cohesive sound of the album is interesting; whilst many producers approach the end of the world subject like a scared child drowning in a sea of sadness and melancholy, Bulletproof’s LP is more akin to a punk spitting in the face of certain death.
He’s angry, and perhaps we should be too.
