The roots are at times neglected when bringing today’s techno down to its bare essence.
But it’s on Carlo Lio’s ‘Bi-Polar’ that we are reminded and kept in check.
In its Original form, ‘Bi-Polar’ is tribal in only a peripheral way.
The beats roll and become nearly polyrhythmic in their repetition, reminding one of something that may be heard during a dancing ritual in a land far, far away.
Fellow Toronto, Ontario, Canada resident Jonny White strips the cut back further to reveal a raindance of a more authentic kind.
It’s White’s Legend Mix that makes the cut sound more acoustic than its Original, and in a way that would work well in a set by a qualified house DJ.
With the release of ‘Bi-Polar’, it is quickly realized that the modern-day equipment know-how that’s associated with techno is at times unjust, because, at the end of the day, it’s about the rhythm and the music — no matter what it takes to get it there.
