Tides feat. Bajka (Ripperton Remix)

Beanfield [Compost]

#02 in this month's The 20

Vocals in dance music are a difficult thing to do right. If the track is too vocal led, it becomes too cheesy, too recognisable, too poppy. The vocal just simply overpowers the beats, which are the pumping heart of a dance music track.

But an understated vocal that is sprinkled onto a perfect instrumental, like a chef would delicately intersperse a salad with a hint of lemon juice, can improve the flavour dramatically.

Ripperton’s remix of Beanfield (pictured) ‘Tides’ is a perfect example of how to use vocals in a club track.

Like John Creamer & Stephan K’s seminal remix of iiO ‘Rapture’ and Rui Da Silva’s beautiful ‘Touch Me’, Ripperton’s remix uses Bajka’s vocals modestly.

The musical parts seem like a black void of deep melancholic house without her words – half spoken, half sung.

The listener urges Bajka to sing more, but Ripperton’s synth-led house teases and flirts back, closing its legs to the dancefloor when all it wants to do is jump right in.
