Italoboyz vs John Coltrane [Mothers...

#02 in this month's The 20

Known since ‘Viktor Casanova’ as being able to magically create minimal based out of soul, Italoboyz do it again with ‘Bahia’ — this time with the help of the legendary John Coltrane.

It may be fitting, too, that the native-Italians-relocated-to-London had put their mark on the world with that track while giving a grand introduction to Claude VonStroke’s underground label offshoot, Mothership, nearly one year ago.

But what’s most interesting is the Italoboyz’ use of Coltrane himself.

Clearly based in a jazz riff primarily focusing on piano (and, in this case, the repetitive use of it), it’s the occasional yet punctual Coltrane sax entry that sets the track apart.

No matter which version you select for your purposes — the Party Swing being for the more upbeat affairs, while the Mucho Lungo version is perfect for late-night excursions — it’s definitely something that will throw the crowd for a loop.

Loop in the technical sense, to be sure, but also in a genre-bending sense.
