‘Astral’ is a Ricardo Villalobos [a]-style house record.

By this I mean it’s clever, minimal and features much more than your usual boom tick and bass.

The arrangement is unusual, the sounds are a rag bag of violins, soaring pads and excited synths, and the producer displays an obvious lack of respect for the norm (which is a good thing).

‘Astral’ sucks you in through its randomness, the sounds bounce and transport about like free radicals without a master.

The violins are the best bit, which appear from nowhere and then detune like odd animals sulking because something stronger is taking over.

That is, beneath their movement is a gently chugging, monotonous groove that will keep your feet moving, which is what Villalobos is all about.
