Walls

Apparat [Shitkatapult]

#11 in this month's The 20

After a year of touring with Ellen Allien for their critically acclaimed album ‘Orchestra Of Bubbles’ you’d have thought Apparat [a] might want to chill out for a bit.

But oh no. Berlin’s Sascha Ring has somehow found the time to produce a new solo album, the follow up to his 2003 debut LP ‘Duplex’.

Despite its title, ‘Walls’ doesn’t house any solidifying concept, it is in fact as disparate and borderless as the instruments Apparat used to create it.

Fusing electronic soundscapes with strings and guitars, and digital beats with intricate studio techniques, has meant Sacha Ring has forged an album that sits at the very heart of modern electronica.

Its free spirit is the very elixir of this scene, indeed Apparat’s album has no walls at all.

It’s difficult to find a standout track on ‘Walls’ because all of them are so very different.

‘Holdon’ which features the vocal talents of Raz Ohara trots along on a blissful sea of pop vocals and glitchy melodic strings – it is probably the most commercially viable track on the album.

‘Fractales Part 1’ reminds of Nathan Fake, instrumental and serene, whilst ‘Fractales Part 2’ is an uncomplicated melancholic and empty.

On ‘Birds’ Apparat even lends his own voice.

Apparat even manages to sound like Thom Yorke with ‘Arcadia’.

If you fancy something unexpected, unique, and experimental Apparat’s ‘Walls’ is the album for you.
